I don't have this feeling at all since what you talk about could work for any OC so far
Maybe I don't remember well but I 99% sure of that because when I've played it I said to myself "ok this is the global plot but where do my character fit ?"
In BG the main character was special — he was a child of Bhaal, and his party was there to help, not to push their own agenda. There was no question about “playing as Minsk” or “playing as Jaheira” because neither had the same problem.
In BG2 they retconned Imoen and made her also a Bhaalspawn but “playing as Imoen” was still out of question because she was absent for the 4/5 of the game. And the party, once again, was there to accompany the main character on his quest.
In other words, everything was about the MAIN character and his fate.
In BG3 the main character is just “one of many” with the same problem. Moreover, he is the least interesting because he is the only one without a backstory, without any ties to the world. As Tav, you exist only to help your fellow travelers reach their personal goals, solve their personal problems, fight their personal demons. You don’t have your own unique problem. Even your dreams are not unique.
So, it is NOT about your custom-made main character anymore.
It is about a group of NPC, each with their own baggage. If you play as one of these characters, there will still be the rest of them to deal with but no Tav the Mute Nobody. He is irrelevant.
You will also be able to create a bunch of mute nobodies, chain them together and play a DnD combat simulator. Yawn.
And that’s why it is a Baldur’s Gate game in name only. It is HUGE minus. I view it as a generic co-op DnD game, a DOS-like set in the Forgotten Realms. There is nothing “Baldur’s Gate” here when the custom-made character is not the focus and can be disposed of without sacrificing much, and every other character is cringe-worthy.
Larian ain’t BioWare (the old one), that’s for sure.
Well said. I've been thinking about this a lot having played many previous Larian games, They really enjoy their intricate OC's but the player gets sidelined. I'm worried that will be the case here as well.
Not really what I mean
The plot = tadpole, that is what tied together the group
But, outside of the tadpole, what is the story of the main character ? All the OC/companions have life before the events of BG3
MC, for now, have too little developpement, background checks sometimes, to be call MC of his own story x)
