At level 1 I'm not sure that class really matters, you're talking like 2-3 hp difference aren't you?
If you have 4 hp, or 6hp, and acid does 1d4 ( as an example) - One of them can die, the other will just be low.
That's not really how the explosions work in this game, there usually a chain reaction of stuff. You have characters starting with 4 hp?
edit: I want to say through all my play through the characters were around 10 to maybe 12, and maybe something as low as 8 or 9. And want to say 3rd play through died from some exploidng glass stuff early and was sort of bogus but whatever, why say some people like it some people don't
Personally I don't think 2-4 health points would matter in like 90 to 95% of the cases, would have died regardless of class in those early situations, but wouldn't know unless did a study.
While making my characters, I rearrange the Abilities so I don't have anything below a 10. That way, I'm not rolling any negatives. If you were a Wizard, you may have an 8 strength which also goes into your athletics and (I think) a survival skill which are both saving throws in the event you go down. So not having a negative roll would help you.
If I'm going to game over - I'd rather it be to some weird, hyper-specific chain reaction rather than due to my ineptitude. The combat will never get over on me in any normal instance.
Don't let the little brain jars dissuade you from destroying things! If anything you should be collecting them now that you know their potentially incendiary destructive property.
Can you even pocket those large jars with the caustic brine in them? For example the ones beside the table where we find "Us"?
I can't remember what the ones near Us are called, but I do pocket the Nautiloid Tanks where you fight the 3 Intellect Devourers with Lae'zel. Between her and a Str Fighter Tav, I usually leave the tutorial with at least 4.
5th edition D&D hit dice for wizards is d6, no class has d4 as in earlier editions. However, you could have a sickly character with a Constitution score of 6 or 8 that grants -2 or -1 HP per level, so yes a couple characters could fare pretty badly already in tutorial. You'll get used to it and my suggestion would be that even if you make a sorcerer or wizard have at least 14 in Constitution score.
