I'd love a kobold companion (rather that a kobold as a playable race). Kobolds are my favorite creatures in the forgotten realms. but it likely wouldn't happen.

Why would you not be able to go beyond level 1? Is there a rule for that in DnD somewhere? No.

yes it's called the monster manual.
kobold is listed there.
and I was being nice at level 1, they are level 1/2

Drow is 1/4 and it is also listed there

That's the monster manual. That's for making encounters for players to fight against. Also, the CR is 1/4. CR stands for combat rating, not level. Again, show me in Volos Guide to Monsters (which is the manual used for using monsters as playable races) where kobolds are limited to 1/2 level.

EDIT: Sorry, didn't look at who replied. But my point stands.
No problem
Also lets not forget Deekin Scalesinger was leveling up as a skald not as a kobold and a character is leveling up in hes class . Volos Guide to Monsters as you say can be used to give a monster that gains ability at level up as a creature additional ability's or maybe remove a few

You can play as a Kobold so long as you agree to being a Kobold. IE roleplaying as a character with an IQ max of 50 and a strength/con/wis/int max of 8.

And with that, we can start talking about kobold traits, and lore. Excellent~

But yes, they have actual stats and quite some of them are above 8. They get a +2 to dex and FINALLY got rid of the -2 to strength.
They are just a happy bunch in their mine and resourceful creatures when it comes to defending their home. Its adventurers that invade their privacy all the time really.
duel classing as playable class

In 5E Kobolds are not playble characters in the PHB.

Neither are Githyanki, or Vampire Spawns. Your argument is invalid.
as of right now Vampire spawn are not either so your argument is invalid

I don't believe Centaurs are in the D&D playable races sorry.
I can't find any reference for them being playable, but that doesn't mean much since there is a book for home brewing races. You can make a playable centaur based on those rules.

Neither are Githyanki. Furthermore, kobolds are playable using the rules listed in Volo's Guide to Monsters. And again, if they weren't, there's that book for home brewing races. (I can't remember the name of it right now.)

Which more than likely will not be implemented in this game so whatever.
It always perplexes me when some people try to dictate what races other people have to play regardless of whether it actually affects them or not.

I had to realize that Kobolds are somehow more popular among the fanarts than e.g. Dragonborne.

Strangely, these Kobolds are shown with ears, in different colors and with short snouts.
They look really cute there.

Kobolds are LUDICROUSLY POWERFUL as Playable characters.

However, they're actually the ONE RACE I love to play. I still have my Snivelskuttle sheet at level 1, 4, and 7 depending on if one of my DMs wants to get back into the game

Kobolds get +2 dex
They also get "Sunlight sensitivity" which gives them disadvantage if they, or their target, are in the open sunlight.

But to make up for this, they get some of the best effects in the game.
1. Pack Tactics - Auto advantage if an ally is within 5m of your target, even at range, even for attack spells.
2. Darkvision 60' , because darkvision
3. Special action ability "Grovel, Cower, and Beg" which grants advantage to anyone attacking enemies within 10m of you as you "Act as a convincing distraction"
4. Halfling size but full 30' movement speed, No speed penalty for having small legs
