Can we not allocate our skill points when we level up?
Just curious as it seems we instantly level and points are spent without us placing them. Or maybe we don't have any points to spend? Sorry new to D & D.

you can allocate.... but you get your first points at level 4....

In previous editions you had skill points to allocate across a variety of fields. Additionally, there were more feats to get, more abilities to choose from, and all around more content to sink your teeth into.

BG3 runs off the latest edition of D&D, 5th edition, whose primary design goal has been to cut the complexity and add simplicity to make a more elegant, if in some ways more "dumbed down" system.

A consequence of that is the removal of skill points, which has been replaced by the proficiency system whose execution varies across classes.

So no. There are no points to spend. There are, however, different feats and class features to get which allow you to choose what your proficiency bonus applies to.

You don't get points every level up. In EA the only chance you get for stats is at level 4

I so sorely miss old 2nd and 3th edition times..... it was a steep learning curve.... but it meant also that the game was more complex and interesting...... now it is like "oooh! ok! this is simple and fun!!.... wait a minute.... that's it??... this is all?"

So at lvl 4 you get skill points to allocate?

No, people replying to you have no knowledge.

In D&D 5e there is no more skill points, you just choose what skills you are proficient with, and you add your proficiency bonus to skills you're proficient. Your proficiency bonus will increase according to your level.

What people are talking about is ability. You get an ability increase at level 4, and more abilities increases according to your class table (a fighter gets another ability increase at level 6 for instance, while a wizard will only get another one at level 8).

Abilities and skills are very different things in D&D.

Example of skills = Athletics, Stealth, Survival, etc.

Abilities = Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, Charisma.

You don't get skill points on level up. You choose your skills at start and the chosen skills improve at higher levels. Some classes can take bonus skills as an options.

You also get ability points to spend at level 4. You can add +2 or +1/+1 or take a bonus feat.

For your attributes, yes. And I think every 4 levels after that.

For most classes this is true except the last one is at 19 to allow lvl 20 to get the capstone ability essentially the gods are very interested in what you are doing.

In addition to the above Rogues will get an extra one at 10 and Fighters will get an extra 2 at 6 and 14.

This is presuming further down the line we are able to go up to 20 levels.

It should also be noted that this is based on classes so multi-classing does run the penalty of losing some of these.

that's why for table top role playing with friends I've switched to Immortal Empires Role Playing Game for Mature Players (subrosagames.com). The publishers hated watered down rpgs, and the system is awesome (but not too compicate) with fighting art powers, an OPEN magic system (no limits on spells really except your imagination). It's quite pricey, but it's worth it (and you only need two books to run a game: the Adventurer's Rulebook and the Storyteller's Codex. But I'm loving BG3 on PS5. Getting more and more fun as we level up.

Move along. Nothing to see here. Just another long dead thread with outdated information being revived for no reasons. Time to put it to eternal rest. Turn undead anyone? :spacehamster:
