[Bug] Gloves of Power
[Expected Behavior] While wearing the gloves, your attacks have a chance to apply bane to your target.

[Actual Behavior] While wearing the gloves, your attacks have a chance to apply bane TO YOURSELF.

Gloves are suppose to debuff your enemies, not you.

ya I read the fluff, but I had thought since I had the tadpole in me that would be the mark they are talking about, I have not got to gut yet but it is like supper obvious what the Absolute is

I understand people's frustration with basically being lied to by item descriptions, but discovering that it does it to yourself (without the mark) in combat is IMO a pretty elegant way of introducing an early basically cursed item. I know I was pretty amused and peeved at myself when after combat I went back in and looked at the actual item description

I rather liked Cursed items in the previous Baldur's Gate games, where if you put them on, you got a distinct sound effect and could not remove them without a Remove Curse spell.

And OP has my sympathy, I too just slapped those mitts on and went on a rampage, only realizing 6 fights later that they were cursed... I'm not the most observant person.

I put the gloves on my cleric and was wondering why she had 'Bane' while fighting the harpies, and wasn't inflicting them with it. Then I had a closer look and laughed. In D&D sometimes you don't find out an item is cursed, or poisoned until it's too late. I liked this for being similar but in a lighter form.

This reminds me of one of my players in my Dungeon of the Mad Mage campaign. Found the "dessicated heart" and thought it would be something useful to use. They attuned to it without doing any research, detect magic, or identifying. The text that they could not see because of this was "Attuning to this item has the effect of killing the player immediately.

is this the same case with the staff that has acid arrow?

Interesting, reading the fluff description, quite right. Perhaps a point of feedback for Devs, if you have a Fluff Description and a Mechanics Description to an item separated, do not hide mechanics in the fluff.

That's the whole point - they're cursed. You're supposed to put them on and be like, "Aww ♥♥♥♥, what did I just do to myself?"

It could be worse, many cursed items in D&D cannot be got rid of so easily. Maybe this is a warning of what's coming later on?

You can't identify items...

Identify isn't much of a thing in 5e unless you play a variant.

The identify spell is the fastest way to reveal an item’s properties. Alternatively, a character can focus on one magic item during a short rest, while being in physical contact with the item. At the end of the rest, the character learns the item’s properties, as well as how to use them. Potions are an exception; a little taste is enough to tell the taster what the potion does.

Sometimes a magic item carries a clue to its properties. The command word to activate a ring might be etched in tiny letters inside it, or a feathered design might suggest it’s a ring of feather falling.

Wearing or experimenting with an item can also offer hints about its properties. For example, if a character puts on a ring of jumping, you could say, “Your steps feel strangely springy.” Perhaps the character then jumps up and down to see what happens. You then say the character jumps unexpectedly high.

BG3 isn't getting this right since it doesn't require the short rest.

The identify spell won't reveal curses anyway. A lore check might, which I guess is what's supposed to be happening with the gloves, except that we always pass it.

I think it's better the way it is. Every item has a story. When you pick up an item from the ground, you either learn the story or you don't know it. There is no manual for "This item is cursed" and it shouldn't be on a plain sight. It completely loses the story telling capacity and fun items are only turned into tools.

Oh wow I've had these gloves for the entirety of act 2 and a lot of act 1 for no reason...this is the first time the description of an item mattered in gameplay. I really think this should be more clear.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
