It's just that when I'm making all these choices about race and class, and skills and spells and appearance, I tend to forget that one little box up at the front that says "Tav". So I've got my beautiful Zariel Tiefling Fighter and I'm so excited and I click start and the game loads and... ♥♥♥♥! I forgot to change that stupid ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ name! Now I'm Tav. What a dumb name.
So I go back to the main menu, recreate my character, and this time stop and name him Magarah. Problem solved, except, it shouldn't have been a problem at all. Why is the name just one tiny little box? Many games have a prompt after character creation where they ask you the name you would like to be, and you fill it in then. That's been a thing for a long time.
In addition, why not have a random name generator built in? I mean, that's not ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hard to do, and it could be based on the chosen race, because again, that's not ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hard to do.
Now, I'm not really complaining, after all, I said that this is my fault, in my haste I tend to click start without thinking about this one crucial field which they have so helpfully prepopulated with "Tav", but If they left it blank and it were a required field then the game could prompt you to fill it in and there would be no Tavs running about at all, but who needs logic right?
What I'm doing is, as requested by the devs in the end cut scene of the early access (seen that twice now with two different non-Tav characters), providing feedback on things I think could make the game better, and that is: 1. Leave the Name field blank and prompt when the player hits start if they haven't filled it in. 2. Go the extra mile and have a random name generator based on race and sex that will help people not steeped in 30 years of Forgotten Realms lore pick a suitable name for their awesome new creation.
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
Yes, but
Even changing the default order of each screen during creation would help here and I have been manually tabbing between them in preferred order with background being the last.
