Finesse Handaxe
The handaxe is a light weapon. Why can't my rogue finesse it? I keep doing -1 str damage instead of +3 dex. Also not getting any sneak attack to land

Light is not the same thing as finesse. Finesse is a separate tag from light.

Light weapons are not finesse weapons. They're two different weapon qualities.

It`s indicated in their description which weapon can be finessed. If you look at a dagger it will say Light AND finesse in the description. It also bothers me that light handaxes cannot be finessed. I"m not familiar with the detail of 5e rules but in 3.5 any light weapons was suitable for finesse.

I assume Light is relevant to dual wielding off hand but I,m not familiar with the detail of 5e rules.

Both your main weapon and offhand weapon have to be light to dual wield. Handaxes are specifically in the game to allow strength characters the option to dual wield.

"Light" means you can dual-wield it.
"Finesse" means weapons can be used with dex instead of str

Thanks for the info. What does the Heavy tag do (I had some 2h weapons and some were heavy and some not)?

light isn't the same as finesse, finesse weapons have their own tags.

Heavy indicates that it if it's used by a small creature (Halfling/gnome) they use it with disadvantage.

Here's a list of weapon properties.
BG3 should use these as stated.

For instance, the Rapier is a Finesse Weapon, but doesn't fall under the light category~

This is due to how the Equipment in question is used, an Axe, for all intents and purposes, is usually swung with all the force one can muster...

Unlike A Rapier, Dagger, or Short Sword, where short, quick motions don't need a lot of force behind them, to deflect or to be angled, effectively~
