I am of the opinion this weapon is designed to give you something to feed to gale.
Or vendor it.
Damage to yourself will break concentration sometimes, so its a non-starter right there for most characters. Its not suitable for a rogue. Its certainly not a good pick for anyone to get weapon mastery at level 4, and if you did, I wouldn't do it for THIS weapon.

Both rangers and fighters can use this for free and fighters have no concentration to break.

Are you really suggesting a Battlemaster or such use Sorrow when there are far better two-handed weapons to use, when there are dual-wielding weapon combos for a Battlemaster that make most two-hander Battlemaster look like a joke, really?! Sorrow is garbage. It's a 'pretty' that serves nothing but storage chest space or a nice space with a local trader, omg.

There are a number of weapons that have side effects.

I think this is the weapon you are talking about;
new entry "DEN_HalsinBlade"
type "Weapon"
using "WPN_Glaive_1"
data "RootTemplate" "0de9e072-7048-4d07-8bbe-79e0591674c2"
data "Rarity" "Rare"
data "Boosts" "UnlockSpell(Target_DEN_EnsnaringStrike_HalsinBlade)"
data "Passives" "DEN_HalsinBlade_Passive"
data "Unique" "1"

or is it the;
new entry "GOB_Torturer_Spear"
type "Weapon"
using "WPN_Spear"
data "RootTemplate" "1fea9dfa-96a6-43c5-bce8-34452baa073e"
data "Rarity" "Uncommon"
data "WeaponFunctors" "ApplyStatus(GOB_TORTURED,100,2,,,,not SavingThrow(Ability.Charisma,10))"
data "Unique" "1"

I prefer the BG sword Adjatha the Drinker;
new entry "WPN_Adjatha_the_Drinker"
type "Weapon"
using "WPN_Longsword_2"
data "WeaponFunctors" "RegainHitPoints(SELF,1)"
data "Rarity" "VeryRare"
data "Unique" "1"

Haven't figured a way for it to overwhelm the soul of the user but all in good time.

Hunters have mark spell which is concentration.
fighters... honestly, they ruined the class and I have ignore it, but with a +2 greatsword or a heal per hit dual wield setup, its hard to justify hurting yourself with this pos. Its meant to feed to gale. It serves no other purpose, or at the most remote possibility, you trigger the camp fight and then pick off the guy with the key and pick it up as your first non junk weapon. OK, that may make it valid until you can get to the bodies of the vendors right outside who have better stuff for you. There isnt anything in between to fight, though.

What weapon / weapon combination is far superior?

It's a 1d10 (which is a little low on a two hander, but not crippling). It is a reach weapon so you get twice the damage distance. It has a 1d12 +3 damage spell on it, that can do 1d6 per additional turn and immobilized enemies. It benefits from GWM and although I haven't tested it, it might also benefit with the GWM bug that allows it to apply +10 damage to every instance of damage.

If by "benefit" you mean smacking yourself for 11 psychic damage every attack, sure.

Yeah just looked it up and is bugged with GWM and does +10 to yourself.

Edit, nevermind, it actually isn't classified as a spear

Still, if "Polearm master" is put into the game, it can serve some pretty nice use.

Polearm Master:

When you take the Attack action and attack with only a glaive, halberd, quarterstaff, or spear, you can use a bonus action to make a melee attack with the opposite end of the weapon. This attack uses the same ability modifier as the primary attack. The weapon's damage die for this attack is a d4, and it deals bludgeoning damage.

While you are wielding a glaive, halberd, pike, quarterstaff, or spear, other creatures provoke an opportunity attack from you when they enter the reach you have with that weapon.

Polearm master is Essentially Two Weapon combat for a Polearm, AND it allows you to provoke opportunity attacks for people ENTERING your reach, OR leaving it
