Can someone explain weapon proficiency?
I read the following: If you have proficiency in a weapon you can add the proficiency bonus to your attacks otherwise you don't.

This makes sense. BUT...

When I click on a light crossbow it doesn't say 'No proficiency' so I assume I have proficiency by default in a light crossbow? I am playing a cleric btw. Anyway, its the same for Gale.

Then I go to the Weapon Master (I think thats the name feat). Apart from the fact that its missing greataxe and haldberd (any reason?) it has weapons that I think (not sure) Im already proficient with: light crossbow, sling, staff. Do I get something MORE from picking them?

Whats the whole thing here?

Thank you

Don't believe so. Double proficiency IS a thing in 5e, but just for rogues and they do it for skills. As far as I know. I think it's their expertise feature by the books. Don't really play them myself.

Toggle character sheet by pressing 'N'.
Now check out your character. Let's just say Gale. Click on 'Wizard'. See the proficiency in weapons. Light crossbow is a simple weapon. More proficiency means better chance to hit. Currently it is early access so some things might be strange.

What does: 'more' proficiency mean? I either have proficiency or don't right? If I do I add the level dependent proficiency bonus. If I don't I don't add it.

If I have proficiency and take it as a feat what does that mean? A bug?

It will take time to explain. You can watch my ' Baldur's Gate 3 Solo Rogue Vs Spectator/Bulette/Minotaurs' video. Remember it is early access, strategy can change any time.

I just want the specific questions answered mate.

1. I have or don’t have proficiency, right? It’s a YES/NO thing not an incremental thing?

2. Is there a point in getting proficiency when I already have proficiency or is the feat bugged?
Amix Dec 10, 2020 @ 3:36am
Yes. Proficiency stacks that is what I wanted to show you in video. And other such things which will save your time & you do not have to create more & more posts. LOL
That video is created for guidance not to show how good player I am.

I dont watch videos mate.

I'm looking for the proficiency rule. I found this:

Weapon Proficiency

Your race, class, and feats can grant you proficiency with certain Weapons or categories of Weapons. The two categories are simple and martial. Most people can use Simple Weapons with proficiency. These Weapons include clubs, maces, and other Weapons often found in the hands of commoners. Martial Weapons, including Swords, axes, and polearms, require more specialized Training to use effectively. Most warriors use Martial Weapons because these Weapons put their Fighting Style and Training to best use.

Proficiency with a weapon allows you to add your Proficiency Bonus to the Attack roll for any Attack you make with that weapon. If you make an Attack roll using a weapon with which you lack proficiency, you do not add your Proficiency Bonus to the Attack roll.

and this:

Proficiency bonus is noted in your character advancement table (in Character Creation file, or PHB p.15) as "Proficiency Bonus", and that is universal for your character level. For example, according to the table, a 3rd-level character gets +2 for proficiency bonus, because the table says so.

Then explain to me according to table. :
Why
Drow rogue using a rapier has same chance to hit an enemy when compared to Astarion.
Drows get rapier proficiency & then as a rogue they get rapier proficiency.
but when you use weapon master feat it increases your hit chance. You have to choose the specific.Let's just say rapier.
it is all bugged right now & can not be explained. So that rule does not mean much. Tested it & in video explained it.
Fighter & rangers can wield anything.

The feat named 'weapon master' increases your chance to hit when you choose specific.
You can check it yourself after reaching level 4. But it is not worth it to spend entire feat.
You just need proficiency once. Then use bless, oil of sharpness, attack from behind etc. to increase chance to hit.

Proficiency is an area where they made the mistake of reusing the word for armor and it makes it slightly confusing.

In old editions proficiency meant "you can use this without penalty." In 5e it means that for armor. Proficiency is the difference between being able to cast spells in it, for example. Proficient in full plate and a wizard? No problem. Not proficient? Can't cast spells. But you don't get to add your proficiency bonus to your armor class.

BUT for other things like weapons it means you can add your proficiency bonus from your character sheet to any rolls with it.

This one is actually a 5e flaw.
Brian Sirith Dec 10, 2020 @ 4:47am
By how much does it increase it?

+1, +2, +CL?

Where is it noted that I have proficiency x 2 on a weapon?

In my character sheet will it write stick x 2?

Is there a 5e guide that explains what happens when you get proficiency on what you’re proficient with?
Soft Lockpick Dec 10, 2020 @ 4:49am
Character sheet has a proficiency section with a + next to it. That's how much. It goes up as you level but it is not equal to your level. Starts at +2. There's rules for it yeah.

Can I get proficiency in the same weapon TWICE? Does it do anything? What if so?

@Lockpick Yeah, I saw that. I understand the proficiency bonus is level dependent.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Don't believe so. Double proficiency IS a thing in 5e, but just for rogues and they do it for skills. As far as I know. I think it's their expertise feature by the books. Don't really play them myself.

Ok this is accurate. I googled a bit more:

https://rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/44243/do-proficiencies-with-one-thing-from-multiple-different-sources-stack

So unless I am a rogue -don’t play them either- I CAN take a proficiency a second time but it DOES NOT STACK. So it’s useless and I should make sure to avoid such overlaps.
