I think it's #1. But if not #2 you are better off going and picking up a different resist anyway mathematically
you can take the better of two options if thats ever the case (IE if you have 2 AC formulas)
but in this example, you just have resistance. choice 1
Tieflings make sense because it's a physical trait from being a half fiend. Rangers get it because... they've seen lava somewhere??
Really, it should be an Advantage to Saving Throw instead. A Tiefling Ranger would also benefit from both abilities then which makes sense.
(strongheart halfling+poison resist ring) is still just 50% dmg reduction for example
feels kinda bad - no resists min/maxing in this game.
If you have to make a Save to only get half of the damage from and effect or spell, and have resistance, then you gain an effective 75% resistance (Save half the damage, and resistance half the remaining damage)
But Resistances do NOT stack.
As someone who likes the D&D Ranger class regardless of edition (4e doesn't exist) I am going to say it...
Have you PLAYED a Ranger in PnP? The class changes that Larian did to the Ranger are changes that I am literally going to put into my home campaign. I think the ability to get a resistance based on where you are known to frequent is brilliant.
Now to go be an evil ♥♥♥♥ in the game and kill an entire Grove of refugees and druids...
