it also doesn't stop certain npcs from yelling and calling for help.

I was thinking how the harpy singing is not a spell so it shouldn't be able to be silenced. Then I realized why silence works to stop spell casting... it takes away sound. Duh. It should make the harpy singing stop. Unless they are using sign language.

Beautiful entrancing sign language

It's kind of silly how it doesn't work on Harpies, however, you'll notice the Harpies singing is an Aura that requires concentration, so it can't really be interrupted unless they are hit.

Again, I agree it's silly, because silence is suppose to remove all sound within a certain radius.
It's because of how Larian implemented it like a lot of other things you'll notice eventually that feel like oversights.

well in divinity 2 in act 1 you're shown and even have 2 quests that let you heal characters and they react to it. The drunk, the wounded soldiers and even Han's leg (the boat kid)

but in act 2 Meistr Siva is injured, but healing her does nothing, she keeps bandaging and blood soaks the bandage, it always bothered me

Does not prevent you from waking up the drunk goblins near the cracked wall in the goblin camp when hitting said wall either

or possibly its because your silence is too low a level to affect their singing. kinda like the level 3 wiz casting dispel magic on the level 10 wizard's wall of fire.. it's just not going to happen.

This could be a factor. If it isn't, it should be. The devs should be looking at all the ways silence can be used, some great examples in this thread, and implement them.

It's an oversight. Silence removes all sound in an area, regardless of what level it is. It's a very powerful spell and is the bane of spell casters everywhere.

Only the sorcerer can ignore it if they have taken the subtle casting metamagic since they can remove the vocal component from their spells with it.

Very true. People don't realize how useful silent spell is (removes either Vocal OR Somatic). Also great for enemies that can counterspell.

So a powerful mage could seeming cast it for no reason then you smell the fart?

While it can remove Somatic, I have only seen it be use to remove Vocal so that people don't hear you casting it, I can only see removing Somatic as useful if the spell don't have Vocal component or you are tied up.

You can counterspell a counterspell, which requires somatic components. With silent spell, you can counterspell without somatic components and the opponent won't be able to counterspell back. In 5e you have to see your opponent casting a spell to counterspell, which they can't if the spell has no components. Confusing, but basically it's useful for a lot of sneaky casting.
