Wizards wearing armor?
I'm not familiar with 5e rules. Is there no arcane armor penalty or is it active in the game but just not shown anywhere? Or maybe it has yet to be implemented.

Because of the mental focus and precise gestures required for spellcasting, you must be proficient with the armor you are wearing to cast a spell. You are otherwise too distracted and physically hampered by your armor for spellcasting.

Wizards and sorcerers start off with no armor proficiency. You can use feats to gain that proficiency though its not really recommended.
As for the arcane armor penalty, there is none in 5e. If you can gain the heavy armor prof as a wizard, you can cast for days without failing to cast!

Thanks for the responses. My githyanki wizard has the martial proficiency to wear the armor but I was expecting to see a penalty like in previous D&D games. Nice.

They wear robes if you consider that armor, or just normal clothing.

There is no arcane spell failure in 5e. If you wear armor you are not proficient in, you get disadvantage on all strength or dexterity based rolls (checks, attacks, and saves) and you can't cast spells. This holds true of any class (clerics, rangers, warlocks, wizards, sorcerers, etc.), racial spells, or spells gained through feats.

Of course you need to get proficiency in the armor if you are a wizard. That means gyth or certain dwarves or lightly armored feat (at 4th) for EA. In the full game, you can armor proficiencies via multiclassing also.

You can even wear full plate if you have the skill and meet the strengt requirement (15 if i am right), so yea you can get a wiz with havy armor.

I don't know in BG3, but in tabletop not having the requited STR for your heavy armor only lowered your speed by 10 ft, you can have a wizard (with like 10 STR and heavy armor proficiency) in heavy armor that cast spells and have a speed 10 ft lower than normal.

No penalty, you just fully cannot cast spells at all while wearing armor you're not proficient in. Wizards and Sorcerers have to rely on the Mage Armor spell and a decent Dexterity for their AC at the moment. They'll probably add the Shield spell at some point, which will help even more.

I think the heaviest armor that wizards and other spell casters, unless speccing or are a partial martial class like clerics, should be leather and other medium armors. I can understand the arguments against this, but the way i see it as a caster gets stronger the need for heavy and even medium armors should lessen since they should have spells that nullify if not complete destroy any kind of threats before even reaching them.
