There's plenty to warrant complaints.
Look at the Pillars of Eternity series. THAT game felt like Baldurs Gate and it's not even DnD. They have a turn based option and that still felt a lot more like BG. I absolutely love Divinity OS 2 but this is not it and it's not what I paid for. Maybe thats what "BG fans" are meaning.
Fighting fire with fire?
So this game isn't what the old BG games used to be. That I can agree on. Heck DnD has moved on what... two full editions and a half edition since the first DnD came out... maybe a few more. So DnD has moved on, it would be logical to assume Baldur's Gate has moved.
But people don't go change well. Geeks and Nerds still fight about what edition of DnD is best, so you're going to get the carry over into BG3 as well.
But honestly to understand why they care so much, you need to play BG1 and BG2.
Others just want to feel better than everyone else so they rant and rave.
Best just ignore them, though it is hard to do as new threads pop up fast.
Btw. they are not really fans of "Baldurs Gate" or of "Forgotten Realm", else they would know Baldurs Gate refers to a region at the sword coast and not the story around Bhaal spawns.
BG1 and 2 were not perfect either, and they ARE very dated. If you try to play them today... this can't work in 2020, sorry. The world has changed over last 20 years and won't come back.
I never played DOS2, and I don't care. But I do know it got some crazy good reviews: https://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/divinity-original-sin-ii
So, what else it BG3 supposed to be like? GTA? Mortal Kombat? Tetris? Goat Simulator?
All RPG are similiar, and some things just work well while others do not. Especially in Baldur's Gate, whcih is supposed to be a classic RPG. Did you expect Larian to develop a completely novel, inferior game on purpose?
Dude, what are you talking about. BG1 and 2 were based on 2nd edition, and it had some serious design flaws.
They complain because they care about the series. Im a long time fan of BG myself and i wasn't really happy when they announced BG3. All i could think about is how it will be just another ruined franchise. Although i don't dislike this game for some reason, i think it could be fun and good game if Larian do their best. So i gave it a chance.
The current edition that BG3 uses is 5th edition.
The older ones were much more complex and a dream come true for build crafting & customizing characters (3.5 for instance had not just the base classes we see now but also beguiler, war mage, duskblade, dragon shaman and just short of 1000 different prestige classes)
The current edition is extremely simple by comparison, it can be fun don't get me wrong but there is so much that was lost that can no longer be done.
Well then of course you can't understand this debate... I suggest you go and play BG1 and 2 and come back afterwards :-)
Consoom, Goy!
