How to actually use a torch for light?
In the title. How do you actually light a torch so the non darkvision people can see?

Good question - the human wizard couldn't see in a cave so I decided to try a torch. I gave up , easier to use light spell. Got to be some better mechanic for this

I believe there are two ways.

1. Holding the torch, right click an interactable item which has a fire source [i.e. candle or candelstand] and there should be an option you can use there.

2. I believe if there is a fire hazard/fire source nearby, you can 'coat' your torch using the 'coat weapon' action.

Otherwise, unless there is a specific item I am unaware of, you can't light the torch.

Hi Fiach,

I tried equiping the torch and lighting it with a candle, a fireplace, a brazier, etc.. Am I missing something?

There was no extra option to light a torch from a candle or other light source, but using the dip action on the light source did light the torch.

Seems like having an item, such as a flint, would be logical to allowing us light a torch.

Dipping the torch in some kind of fire will do it.

Well, shooting a fire arrow at the ground so I can light my torch seems kind of stupid. I guess I could carry around a lit candle and drop it when I need to light a torch? I hope they put in a "light torch" option.

Wiz has firebolt that creates a fire surface.....use "dip" with a torch equipped. If no wizard you can put a candle on the ground with "drop item" from your inventory, then use "dip".

In my experience of 5E, torches are rarely ever used. The Light Cantrip usually resolves most issues around light and so outside of an anti-magic area/field you'd almost always use that but the Goggles of Night are the best solution in 5E... in this game I suspect there will be lots of fancy headware that will not be usable with Goggles of Night.

If this is like 5E you only need light in areas of complete darkness and only for characters lacking darkvision, else wise all you get is disadvantage to perception rolls which also reduces passive perception by 5
