Think some folks forgot BG was always rtwp. turn based is a bit antiquated and a niche market group. It will put a lot of folks off BG3.

Turn based is way more popular now. That's why pathfinder and pillars of eternity have official turn based modes: because of user demand.

No one really cares about RTwP anymore.

But RPG and Turn base goes together like Peanut Butter and Jelly.

RTwp works better in my book since it feels a little bit more fast paced, especially since stats play such a huge factor in the success or failure of a given attack, spell, etc. Its a good compromise for D&D games when translating the turn based roots of actual D&D into a video game. Watching a turn play out and seeing one of your characters miss or something because of a bad roll and having to wait until its your turn again is very unappealing to me.

I have the same issue with grand strategy games like Civ, and would rather play Starcraft since the pacing helps keep me engaged, thinking quickly, and trying to make the best decisions possible for a given situation.

That said, I do plan on giving the game a go since it is still a Balder's Gate sequel. I mean... come on!
Why call someone boomer? Don't you know us real boomers started out with RPG's that was all turn-based? If anything a boomer would be all for turn-based and not the other way around :P
Absolutly unplayble game. Random and school hardcore.
I am so happy this game is turn based, I didn't care for the original BG because of the RTwP system. There are plenty of real time games to play out there, if you don't like this one you can go play something else.
I'm convinced 90% of the whiners are the same 5 RTwP cult scrubs looking for new attacks.
Hence why their profiles are always private; they don't want people knowing they did not buy the game.
I mean, rtwp is more dynamic as you can "speed through" encounters, but I think it just isn't feasible considering what Larian was trying to bring to this game in terms of interactivity. And is there really that huge of a differente between pausing every second to micromanage and playing turn based? That said I think they'll have to balance the encounters quite well to avoid boring people to death, one of the downsides of turn based, but overall I think it ll be fine.

So what exactly is so distasteful about RTwP, why don't people like it anymore? I respect everyone's opinions / previous jokes aside - I honestly don't understand. RTwP feels sooooo much more flashy to me/ ntm less stressful when fighting 100 dungeon rats when turn based takes a year for the same fight.
Can someone explain the general views on the downsides?
Myself I LOVE the TURN based game with real time approach between combat! Makes you able to use proper tactics and use the terrain to your advantage.

So, "D&D ruined by D&D" then?

Pretty much. Hence why some people, even in the D&D community prefer older rulesets.

And to hamstring a video game to rules for a tabletop game is arbitrary. I would rather the devs try to make the best game they can, then be boxed into a ruleset made for tabletop.

I'm sure Larian will tell you their trying to make the best game they can, and that best game is turn based.
Couldnt agree more OP, RTwP is the best

Dont let the turnbased baddies tell you otherwise

I think many big fans of the Baldur's Gate games will have decided to buy it when they say "Baldur's Gate 3", and will discover the genre switch after that. Hopefully people will enjoy it anyway.

I do think there's merit in the idea this should have been called "Baldur's Gate: Something Else" which implies a change, reboot or spin-off of some sort rather than "Baldur's Gate 3". You could be forgiven for expecting it to be, well, the same sort of game as Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2.
Pretty much the most reasonable argument i've seen. I think calling it BG3 was a mistake given the history of the series. Would have been better to simply call it D&D: The Forgotten Realms or something like that.
You got your turn based game in my RPG

You got your RPG in my turn based game
