How does the cleric cantrip guidance work?
Edit: To clarify, I know guidance is a cantrip, and I know it results in a buff. In standard D&D the buff is consumed when the player decides to use it on an ability check. My question was essentially that if
1) I'm buffed with guidance and 2) I roll an ability check whether Guidance is automatically used on that ability check, AND if there's any way to tell, AND if it's consumed.

Answer seems to be that it's automatically used, it's hidden at the moment (but the DC for the roll might appear lower) and that it isn't conusmed.

I know in 5e proper it's something you choose to do, but I've never seen a popup during a skill check or when shoving someone or any typical "ability checks" (from a tabletop perspective).
Have I missed a toggle? Is it just "always on" and being rolled in the background?

It's not always on, you actively need to cast it.

Guidance actually ends up being considered one of the most overpowered cantrips in all of d&d, just because so many people try to treat it as something that's always on. They try to apply it to every possible skill check if the DM allows it,

Realistically, it's meant to be like the name implies. A helpful hand for an anticipated moment of difficulty, where one would have the time to explain how best to handle a situation. It's not something you can instantly apply to anything you see fit.

The game forces you to apply it on someone, which is a proper usage. That being said, if you want to cheese pretty much any initial skill check in a conversation you initiate. I'm pretty sure the game will easily let you get away with that.

THE BUFF is consumed.
It's a buff, that lets you add a 1d4 roll for one ability check. At which point you'd need to recast it as an action.

No, it's not. I just tested it. The spell is still active on my portrait.
....IN TABLETOP D&D THE BUFF IS CONSUMED WHEN YOU ROLL IT ON AN ABILITY CHECK...

Yes, I know. Which is why I tested it in-game and provided empirical data to alert players to the fact the mechanics were either slightly different or bugged.

Go and sit in a corner and cool down.

Edit: just tested it again - it functions as a 10 turn duration buff, infinite skill checks within that time limit, requires concentration during that time (not a problem outside of combat) and then requires recasting.
