And just to be clear the ranger animal companions are almost universally considered the worst subclass of any class in the entire game because using them is literally worse than just attacking yourself.
I really hope Larian uses the Artificer Iron Defender rules for the Beastmaster Animal Companion. I know there was talk about them making some changes in a rewrite together with WotC
For that matter Familiars can also attack with their own action as well.
It's the worst, but I'm still enjoying it...even though it ia suboptimal to the extreme.
FYI: Your Animal Friendship spells are worthless. Every animal you come across that would be worth charming is already hostile to you, AND casting it on them before they see you MAKES them hostile
Yeah, you get a wolf, bear, bird and spider at level 3
Normally there's some scaling based on your Ranger level and proficiency bonus, but it might not be implemented yet.
For instance the bear has low hp while the spider has higher hp than the bear. Ranger seems fine as a class imo, but need to fix the pets for sure.
Yeah, it was more of a worry for me because I thought the level cap was 10 right now. Now I've just found out it is 4, it's less of an issue since they don't have room to scale much anyway.
It looks like what they've done to make the pets currently static is mostly take from the monster guide. All the animals conform to the HP of the monster guide... Except the giant spider. Giant Spider has 26hp and they gave it 32. The Beastmaster should also only have access to the giant wolf spider, rather than giant spider, which would have 11hp anyway.
I've been enjoying the game so far! My main issue is currently the beastmaster subclass, and more specifically, the giant spider.
So far, it looks like the animals aren't scaling with ranger level, which makes sense with the level cap being 4 right now as there is not much room for scaling. Based on the HP of the companions, it seems they've been taken from the monster guide, except for the giant spider, which has 32 HP rather than 26hp. Even then, to bring the spider in line with other companions, it should really be based on the Giant Wolf Spider having 11hp since that would stop having the spider be the only real option for combat. Plus, having a hairy spider is always interesting...
If that change was implemented, then all the animal companions would have a use... Apart from the wolf it feels like.
The bear would be the tank and can draw enemy attacks
The boar can charge through enemies and knock them all prone if they're in a line
The spider could fire webs and poison enemies
The raven can scout
The wolf has the best attack ability, but with the bear attack ability being 1d8, it's not by much and doesn't have much utility. If something like pack tactics from DnD was added, it would make him have more utility in line with the other animal companions.
Look forward to seeing how the beastmaster subclass evolves in the future!
