Alignment and religions in DnD were always integral. Now they'be been done away with, because the point is to de-moralize the audience.
Even in 3.5e the benefits of an alignment system was murky at best. Like everything that had any relation to Undead got tagged "Evil" because "objective morality" despite pretty much all the source books saying that Undead aren't necessarily evil and that many things like Mummies are also used as guardians by good. Like it got so ridiculous that Forgotten Realms needed a second monster type that was literally identical in all ways to undead except it had the good descriptor instead of evil.
None of that stuff exists in 5e. Outside of the different Outsider subtypes alignment is irrelevant in 5e and that's a huge step forward.
Tho the problem with alignment in games like this is that it is never consistent.
If you dont allow for alignment change then the alignment system is pointless.
And if you do you get different alignment rewards for the same action due to different quest designers have different point of view of what is good.
Remember that mass effect arguement that murdering an entire city of geth would be far more paragon then brainwashing them?
Or how in swtor the alignment reward seemed random due to how the same action resulted in different rewards depending on who made the quest?
I can fully understand why people rather avoid the subject.
For example: Looting is stealing?
Yes? No?
Or how about the stuff we just take because it doesnt have a steal tag on it.
Could you imagine how much you have to avoid picking up if everything you didnt make, bought or harvested yourself was consider stolen?
Or how much money we lose out if we coudnt sell the stuff we loot.
There is a lot of stuff we ignore for gameplay sake.
The fact we are all chaotic evil murderers is one of them.
