$10-$15 subscription fee per month. As of today, Microsoft (Xbox) owns 23 game developer studios, and before their announcement of their acquisitions of Bethesda that they had 15 million subscribers.
It looks like Microsoft/Xbox's business strategy moving forward is cloud gaming, game anywhere on any device via the game pass, and make as many people want the subscribe as possible, rather than get one-time licensing fees for games.
It's basically becoming the Netlix of video games. But yeah, it made me think when I saw Crusaders Kings 3 on the Xbox Game Pass library that it may be possible for Baldur's Gate 3 to end up there as well.
It's a monthly fee and you lose access to the games when your Membership runs out, oh and you have to play it from the Microsoft/Xbox App which is pretty awful. Other than that I don't think there is any other downsides.
I think they cycle every couple of months, but i'm not entirely sure, I haven't really looked into it much.
If they're first-party games for Xbox (say, any studio that Xbox owns) they stay up. I think 3rd party games cycle, depending on licensing fees or timed contracts between Xbox and these developers.
I had Monster Hunter 4 on my xbox via the game pass and when I uninstalled it to make room for another game I couldn't install it again until it came back to game pass, which it did.
Which means Bethesda games, Obisidion games, and a whole bunch of other games are now going to be permanent fixtures on the game pass.
At least, that's my personal experience. I don't know the legal technicalities between xbox and 3rd party developers so I can't say for sure.
Dragon Quest XI is on it though, even though it's not coming to xbox until November or December.
It's not that bad on the actual xbox console. In fact it works great there, but yeah, it needs some work everywhere else.
Otherwise, the best part of the deal is the possibility that Obsidian might get to work on a Fallout game again, potentially with a not hot garbage engine instead of...whatever BGS has been putting out.
I get that Microsoft does not own Larian, but that does not mean that Microsoft won't work with Larian for licensing fees to make Baldur's Gate available on the game pass. There are plenty of games on there right now that aren't owned by Xbox and Microsoft.
