Softcore porn? Whats the point?
I see that intimate relationships are being implemented. Why? Seems like a waste of the gamer's time. Is there any reason for it other watching the characters do it?

Well, if you've played Bioware games(Mass Effect and DA) or The Witcher games for example, those have had nudity and sex scenes as well. Nothing new. Also, they were already probably going for a Mature rating with all the Mindflayer and gore and stuff, so might as well.

Witcher was a european game, who generally have far less hang ups about sex and nudity than we prudish Americans.

I for one like the idea of soft core sex scenes being in game. If only the companions so far weren't all humans and elves. They need to throw in some Orcs and monsters!
And Larian is a European game studio as well.
Also, one companion is a githyanki, but yeah, I would like some more variety among the companions since we already have two humans. Baldur's Gate is one of the most diverse cities on the Sword Coast, so I bet there will be some other race companions too.

Who are basically space elves!

Quick side note about character creation: I wonder if being a Lolthian Drow will remove the option to customize your eye color, since having bright red eyes is supposed to be a signature feature of the sub-race?
Maybe, that would be interesting. Also I'm very interested to see what people's reaction will be if you end up play as a Lolthian Drow.

Based on the last community update im going with a hard no on that one. They said they will have cannon options but you can ignore that if you want just for character creation. A good choice imo as making a character your own is the biggest part of D&D even if sometimes it goes against lore

hate the red eye arguements. In lore their eye colors very they only turn red, like goblins, orcs, and other creatures do to the chemicals/magical nature of there inherient dark vision. For proof red the Dark elf series by RA Salvatore where most drow had eye color though far different then human eye color in a wider range. Drizzt himself had purple eyes. (no drizzt should not be in this game!)

As for romance or soft core porn in a video game it adds to the immersion, is a plot hook to lure you in and make you start caring about the characters. Plus realistically going on wild adventures as a free spirited or even forced adventurer you build up stress. Stress is often relieved even in modern day by drinking, smoking, bumping uglies (which can allevate alot of stress. Or cause more) listening to music etc. So in ways it makes sense to have romance options in game to aid in immersion. Hopefully they do it properly, and not have Skyrim quaility, or even worse yet Mount & blade series styles of 'Romance??' to name two.

Gamers feel a certain smug satisfaction from getting their character laid.

Since most video game players are male, intimate players will get more than they want.

uhm. this is not true. I happen to be female and know many female gamers. I am very excited that there is romance in Baldurs Gate 3. I think relationships really add to the immersion in a game.

As far I understood, we shape and write our own story, so, if you want romance, it is possible, which I find a good thing, and if I do want romance between characters, I think, " softcore porn " or whatever, is nothing bad, I mean, the characters are adults, and if attracted to each other, thats what happens I guess, for people that do not like romance, and sex in a RPG game like Baldurs Gate, it is optional after all, write your own story, up to the player entirely.

For me, I enjoy a good romance, it does givemy RP experience a bit more character development, but thats just me.

i'm also curious how the romance will be handled, for example if my creation wants to get involved with all companions at once? will accepting one path automatically closes rest? do remaining companions acknowledge my "taken" status? what if i want to pursue someone else in the middle of my current fling, will i break it and have nothing?

my memory might be a little off, but didn't Aerie lose some ♥♥♥♥ when protagonist slept with dark elf during their romance arc?

very good questions. Now I'm curious as well, and we have over 48 hours before we may get an answer. some may get it sooner, but I'll be stuck in character creation. Gotta get Winky's meatsuit looking just right.

Drizzt is not a Lolth Sworn Drow, to the best of my knowledge. And I was watching a video breaking down the character creation reveals for Early Access, where they mentioned that Lolth gave her followers bright red eyes so that everyone would know to fear the Drow on sight.

3:34 into video, where it talks about Lolth Sworn Drow.

https://youtu.be/CQOqiWhFNEw

Hmmm, true he could be Serune drow, though honestly that whole Lloth sworn vs Serune drow is a bloody pain in the posterior. The amount of years coupled with each house taking other houses drow into their beds, houses, etc would thin out the true born. Even the Arch mage of Mezorbarean who is a Baenre eyes weren't red, and nor was that of his offspring.

edited though it may also be do to a retcon by WoTC I've fallen out in lore do to fact I'm not a big fan of editions after 3.5

From what we see in the video, the sub-races for Drow are Seldarine Drow, and Lolth Sworn.

Selune was just one of the deities that you could pick, if you were a Cleric.

now I have to go look up Seldarine... from my knowledge be that as it may, mostly book knowledge, and source books Selune was the other goddess of the Drow. Not sure who or what this wench Seldarinne is trying to muscle in on Selunes turf.

The Seldarine is the entire elven pantheon...

Or at least, it's the pantheon that the surface elves follow. Lolth created the Dark Seldarine, who are what most of drow culture worships instead.

Ahh, thanks. Long elven names go right out of my head.

From books most of the Seldarine have given up on Drow letting Lloth do her thing, Selune though did have drow followers? this from books outside of D&D source books, so should be canon but might not be.

I've never actually heard of any other Goddess/God supporting the drow other then Lloth, and Selune.
