Given that you face Illithids, I would doubt that you will be able to avoid every combat encounter.
That attempt is vain. Life is so hollow so what would be the point? Maybe the other party members can make things work out but that is highly unlikely. lol.
I LOVE Xan. He's like Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh, only a powerful elven mage.
I usually struggle to get him in the party because if I'm doing an evil run I usually have Edwin by the time I meet Xan and if I'm doing a good run and I haven't found a way to get Xynaheir killed or removed for Minsc then I don't need two mages in the party.
But yes, he's a fun character to have.
think the game forces you in the starting area to have a party so it can introduce the companions
