Maybe the elf or half elf since they can see in the dark.
Is the drow going to be like the undead in dos2? Where you can’t even not cover up your face?
In terms of basic/good for everything humans/variet humans are the best choice. a free feat is fantastic and lucky is prob better than any racial
Humans are generally seeing as the best since they get along with any race and sleep with anything.
TBH, I don't know why isn't their half elf-half gith for example. Or half Dawrf-half elf. It is just dumb dnd logic.
Yes.
Further, it's not like 5e is alone in having balance issues across every edition of the game. So that particular point is irrelevant.
Lest we forget the splatbook bloat of 3.x and nonsense like Pun-Pun technically being RAW. And that's just one of myriad examples from that edition alone.
Yea, and if perfect balance was what made an RPG popular then 4e would have been way more popular than 5e, but thats not the case.
Yes that makes sense. If WotC released an updated version of the PHB today they would most likely tweak those classes a bit.
I believe they mention in the AMA that they're using playtest materials from WotC to make adjustments to the Ranger specifically.
Makes sense. WotC is aware enough of the Ranger's issues to dartboard multiple reworks and alternative features over the past several years.
- Human
- Elf
- Drow (basically D&D's Dark Elves, VERY edgy matriarchal elves)
- Half Elf
- Half Drow
- Tiefling
- Halfling
- Dwarf
- Githyanki
As a complete noob to D&D who has only read a few race guides, I'll also try my best to break them down a bit here.
- Humans are your standard guys and gals, they're good at everything but master at none.
- Elves in D&D have many sub-races (High Elf, Wood Elf, Sea Elf, etc.), and depending on the sub-race, can make good mages (High Elf) or Rogues (Wood Elf). They also have a weird reincarnation thing in the lore (at least the ones who believe in the Elven Pantheon do).
- The Drow are technically a sub-race of Elves, however they split off from their brothers due to a spat between two of their Deities, and went underground. They're a matriarchal society that values backstabbing, seeking power at all costs, slavery, and murder. It's uncommon for them to escape the Underdark (The dark caverns stretching below the surface) but not impossible. They have night-vision because of their subterranean lifestyles. Also, Driders exist down there too, they have the upper body of a Drow and lower body of a spider, usually because they got unlucky to be called to a challenge thing by their deity and lost. Driders are the lowest of the low in Drow society, as Drow think that the Driders are weak to the point to where their deity literally had to help them survive by changing them. Drow also suffer a debuff in direct sunlight too.
- Half Elves are what happens when a human and an elf love each other VERY much. They have the best of both worlds. They're kinda on the outside of society though, not fully welcomed by human or elven society.
- Half Drow are what happens when a human and a drow get together, not necessarily out of love (Drow are merciless raiders mind you, they're not lovey-dovey types), or otherwise. They DO NOT have the sun debuff weakness regular Drow do, and I think they still get night vision, not sure.
- Tieflings are what happens when somebody's family makes a pact with an infernal and ends up having a big injection of infernal blood into their family tree. They have a resistance to fire, have horns and a tail, and skin ranging from normal coloration to dark red. Despite appearances, they're not all evil, some are downright good despite their infernal heritage. They can have different buffs depending on who or what their lineage comes from.
- Halflings are kinda like Gnomes, smaller and less stockier than Dwarves.
- Dwarves are short guys and gals who like rocks and beards.
- Githyanki are space-elves that got enslaved by the Mind-Flayers until they had a rebellion. Their deity made a deal with some lich-queen from one of the many hells of D&D, I forgot which one, to help back their rebellion up. They got tamed Dragons to ride out of the deal and can often be seen as raiders and warriors riding atop Dragons. While normally bloodthirsty guys and gals, they ESPECIALLY hate Mind-Flayers and will go out of their way to end them in the most brutal way. They're not really good at anything other than warfare and murder though.
I'm not really sure about the stats (I'm new to D&D as a whole) but I did read a bit up on the lore and hope it helps you when you decide what you wanna play.
