Depends what you define "bad". The Steam surveys argue that GTX 1050 / ti cards are amongst the most popular used. Chips such as the GTX 960 or 750 ti also still hold a significant market share. Yet all of those don't even meet the minimum requirements for BG3 EA.

Amongst BG3's (or Larian's) userbase it may be even higher, as you neither needed a beefed up PC to run CRPGs as well as Larian's games typically, in particular both DOS games.
And, to be honest, the temporary requirements are pretty close to Flight Simulator 2020's
Literally no reason to ever buy a RX 580.
A RX 590 is cheaper and better, so is a GTX 1650 Super.
$1.5k? Wut?
I can buy a 2080 TI, new, for $1,250. The price difference between a 1080 and 2080 is nowhere near $1,500.
Whether you'd call it a potato is a matter of reference, but a GTX 780 is about 47% more powerful than your mobile 1050. Even a 760 is more powerful than a mobile 1050.
1050's or 1650's for that matter, are pretty terrible purchases in laptops IMO. In desktops they're not as bad since you can swap out the GPU later, but in a laptop, you have to replace everything, so it's more cost effective to go a bit higher end initially so you don't need to upgrade as often.
Not sure what you spent for your laptop, but I have seen 1660 TI laptops as cheap as $750. When they're not on sale they're more frequently found for about $1,000.
A 1660 TI is 135% more powerful than a 1050. Nearly 2.5x the performance, and not that much more expensive.
Anything below a 1660 TI, in a laptop is a bad purchase IMO.
