Taking a little something from Disco Elysium
The more i talk about with friends or play Disco Elysium the more i cant get over i want EVERY choice heavy RPG to have one mechanic, the Thought Cabinet.

For those who never played the general idea is when you do certain things your character will have the option to think and internalize those thoughts into part of your character and personality. While in Disco it generally comes with status effects it also comes with different dialogue and options at times.

5e doesnt leave a lot of room for stat increases or they are very important, i wouldnt expect them to be anything other than flavor text. Backgrounds already have a function like this in DOS2 and will likely in BG3 but being able to internalize other things after creation can really help you feel like your character is growing and is more personal. Steal a whole bunch of stuff and you can unlock more dialogues dealing with being a thief. Join a cult or acting like a bandit could open paths for how to interact with people. I know its too late to add things like this (especially if everyone is voiced) but maybe its something we could see if BG3 sets up for a 4th

I believe that Larian did some consulting for Disco Elysium, they are mentioned in the credits for it. So there is a good chance that they have taken some things, or at the very least looked into, Disco Elysiums system and structure. Some of the elements from it may be integrated into BG3.

Heck, now I’m even more hyped for the game. This definitely needs to be added.

While Disco Elysium was my 2019 GOTY and i absolutely loved the thought cabinet as a concept, i thought it didn't go far enough and was too shallow .. i began to feel this way when i internalized the hobocop thought and later didn't have money to pay for a room and i thought i could just sleep on the streets because literally i'm a hobocop, but no ..
And yes the thought had some modest uses but not something truly memorable, and same for other thoughts .. just a few stats and barely a few options here and there in conversations , i wouldn't even compare it to the impact i felt in D:OS2, with all the options tailored for different background factors, such as race and occupation, and villainy during the game or heroism ..etc .. i saw these options in almost every conversation and really felt their impact constantly.
Obviously Larian are gonna expand on that in BG3 so i'm not worried, and i'm also very excited to see what Zaum will do with their next project, i'm sure the thought cabinet could be very special if they really expanded on it.
btw, in my opinion, the truly revolutionary part in Disco Elysium was the unique internal skills and their implementation in conversations.. the thought cabinet was mostly an unfinished prototype

i agree it didnt go far enough for what it could have been (although the writing and choices are already really packed) but looking at how DOS2 did it with backgrounds i feel they could go even further with it to really make the idea special and fully fleshed out.

Also i think you mean Hobocop not homocop :p although i thought the small bit of the homosexual underground thought was really nice and a great statement on peoples obcession with sexuality

Basically, for people who love to play with friends around a table, we definitively need AAA games that follow Disco Elysium's path and improve it.
"Trekking RPG" are a huge disappointment since Morrowind gameplay was better that what followed (even if the game was heavily flawed). And it's mostly because they are not "alive" yet, they are not organic enough to me. They are far from life-sized RPG who are way more specialized than those games.
And BG or DOS (and others) are more adventure games than RPG to me (and I like them because they implement some good RPG mechanics).

But yes, Disco Elysium is something that may change computer's RPG for good. I hope so at least ^^

They did consult on DE and I believe they have elements of it in their system as well. But we will have to wait and see. Until then I have turned Stellaris into a Spelljammer campaign

I feel like a game has gotta either just be ABOUT that, or not try it. Going halfsies here would be a mess.
