Allow me to pause!
I've been trying to stay neutral in the turn based vs real time argument, but, in either case, allow me to pause the damn game when I need to. As someone who needs to frequently step away from the keyboard, I've had to stop playing MMORPGs altogether, but I've been able to fall back to playing any number of PC games. Larian, though, hates pausing with a passion and I hope this passion doesn't carry over to Baldur's Gate 3.

There are plenty of situations outside of combat that I might need to pause. Unless I've missed something, if it does end up being turn based like DOS, that part only applies to combat. Just as an example: If my party is in a dangerous area with patrolling guards, I'd have to spend valuable time backtracking or completely log out of a Larian PC game or any MMORPG. Real life doesn't play like that and there are frequent times that I might need to pause suddenly.
That literally has never applied in all of act 1... enemies don’t patrol outside of a small area which you can stand a few feet away from and never trigger combat.

Or do you like to sneak in the spider nest and want to pause 3 meters away from queen? Really not necessary.
@Brian Sirith: Thank you for the honesty. At least one person here understands what a simple and proper pause is. I'm not sure why Sven hates having a proper pause so much. Hopefully they'll add it within the next year, I guess.
Just quicksave if you need to step away. Even if you get attacked while you're gone, it goes into turn based mode as soon as combat starts. Once it gets to your turn the game will be effectively paused anyway since it will have to wait for you to take your actions.
Umm... I would like to pause sometime to turn on/off attack of opportunity or Riposte? Mostly Riposte. At least, until a better system is in place for Reaction abilities
3 pages in and no one gives him a proper direction?
spacebar pauses at any time outside of combat. It's a true pause, no one but you can take actions. The world will be perfectly still while you go to the bathroom.
The original request was put in *way* back then. There is still no option to properly and simply pause. I keep seeing people referring to the turn-based mode. This does ... eventually ... pause the game, but it acts entirely differently than any pause mechanic with intelligent design does. Has anyone not played the original BG games or any other games with real time elements to understand how a basic pause mechanic should work? Hopefully, this serious oversight will be added soon, along with some auto-pause options.

Exactly! I was about to wrote this too. Not as convenient as ESC pause in other single player games but still a decent pause.
you have two options: Pressing ESC will generally pause the game.
OR...
You can turn on turn-based mode.
The latter is an effective "pause" button since no one can do anything until you take your "turn"
But a pause wouldn't help that. If you're paused, you can't be talking to the owlbear.
Can't you just set it to turnbased mode at any time and that will effectively pause the game? Could be wrong maybe only your characters get turnbased while NPC enemies still move around.
Player controlled pausing in any other strategy game that has real-time elements, including BG1 and BG2, allows the player to queue actions while paused. I forgot that I had make a mod request for DoS at the official forums: https://forums.larian.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Main=85354&Number=654122#Post654122. I had hoped that there would be improvements made for BG3, but Divinity engine isn't capable of allowing player-controlled pausing and queuing of actions. Apparently, it's also impossible for modders to add without serious code support. I guess that I'm the only player here that uses player controlled pause in this fashion.
the game needs pause, i'll give you a scenario what happens in owlbear cave.

in this cave there is a little creek, if you cross it and Astarion is in your party, he will run around it and triggers the combat. of course you can be fast enough if you notice him sprinting and click on him then the rest of the party starts running towards him. of course they will chose the shortest path, yeah and guess what direction they will run to. that's why the chain crap hast to go.

this is only one example, there are more.

I'm a little confused. When would you need to queue actions outside of combat?

Why are you ever moving your entire party as a group while you are anywhere near any encounter in the game that isn't a complete surprise?
