What type of Xbox controller are you using and are you connecting it via bluetooth, wireless adapter, or wired usb connection?

For example, I am using the official usb wireless adapter and connect both of my Xbox One controllers to it simultaneously.

"For example, I am using the official usb wireless adapter and connect both of my Xbox One controllers to it simultaneously"

This is exactly how I do it. When I start into the game it is always defaulting to the keyboard. Then I have to go to controller setup and there I can setup a controller but only ONE controller works at the same time. So when I go into multiplayer spit screen only the Controller last setup works. We play a few games together and all of them both controllers work flawlessly. I even tried a PS4 controller and my Keyboard as second input, same issue.

Forgot to say, both are xbox one controllers with the official adapter. How do you set the controllers up in game? Does it recognise them when you start it up?

It automatically recognizes both xbox one controllers when I start up the game. I will test this again soon and let you know if it's still working correctly. Sorry that I couldn't be of more help.

I've had the same issue with switch pro controllers... until I went into the game configuration and set "Steam Input Per-Game Setting" to "forced on". Don't ask me why this is necessary. This solved me problems with other games too. Good luck!
I have the same problem.

I have 2 controllers, I can play local (split-screen) multiplayer with them, but I can't configure the 2nd controller, there's no interface to do it, and I don't know if there is a game file I can modify.

Again, the problem is not that the controllers don't work, they do work, but the button layout of the game by default is just too different from other kart games that it feels unconfortable.

make sure you have the controllers on the latest firmware via Xbox Accessories in the Microsoft Store - the amount of people who don't know about this is worrying.

Same problem with 2 Xbox wired usb controllers. This is a MAJOR bug. People buy this game so their kids can play together.

I cannot play split screen because it only recognizes one controller at a time. In the menu section, it only recognizes the keyboard and "Enter" only works for player 1. Therefore, I cannot select "Enter" or confirm selections for any other player and start the game. I have configured a playstation hori controller that works for one player mode. Please help. I cannot play the game with split screen, which is why I purchased it for my kids.

THIS WORKED

Thank you!

From steam, right click on the game in library, go to properties, controller, select enable steam input
