I'm new to the game. I chopped down a cactus near town and someone told me i shouldnt chop trees. But i didnt chop i tree, it was cactus?

How can i tell what counts as a tree in game and if its too close to town?

Yes, it is not allowed to fell trees near the city and in the city itself. and that includes cactus.

It's always best to go a bit outside, for example behind the workshop, and cut down cactuses and trees there.

(Sorry for the bad english but i always use google translate for longer texts.)

The cacti are confusing. You can chop the ball cacti and anything that says "dead wood"

Thanks. My axe is too low for deadwood. But someone they said anywhere outside the fence is fine.

Anywhere on the butte Sandrock occupies is considered "in the city limits" but after that first warning it is only an issue if a NPC is nearby to observe you cutting the Cactus Tree down.

Mi-an and/or Burges are allways nearby... I understand that her is looking for materials, but I would supose he should have better things to do.

Clearly he is right to patrol around in case someone cut one of the rare big trees and cacti, since you all are doing it :p

It's also something realistic, as in some places irl it is literally a felony to cut big old cacti, who are basically like trees in many ways, and I think it's a nice touch. You just gotta be patient, not to use too much wood at first, and you'll get pleeeenty later.

(there's enough scraps, bits of wood from kicking the trees and buying some for what you need in early game before getting better tools, but that's just my opinion)

Good rule of thumb, if you can kick it, you should consider not cutting it down, if you CAN'T kick it, it's fair game

Once you have access to the other side of the bridge - you can cut down, mine etc to your hearts content ... its how i get most of my water ...

Rule of thumb, outside the city, no one around, you can cut it down.

An NPC said outside the fence is fine, but i still got "caught" very close to the fence (on the outside) so i reloaded and moved further away.

There is plenty of bushes, ball cacti, deadwood and wood piles to put the wood scraps on a recicler. Last scenery, you can buy wood at the wather shop or commerce guild. Once you repair the bridge, as KarmicRequiem said, all cacti beyond are free.

West of the bridge is fine. Burgess only cares about the area closer to the town.
