There are References, but you don't have to play it first or at all.. but I doubt you will not play it after playing Sandrock. Just Enjoy the games.
Almost nothing to do with Portia, to be honest. You will have some references at the last third part of the game, but even then having played the Portia have no real diference to the understanding of the game.
Also, if you play sandrock first, you will REALLY feel the diference between the quality of life in the gameplay between the two games
From the story dialogue of the npcs in Sandrock, they talk about the story events that happened in Portia (such as just simply mentioning the rogue knight being in portia) as if it's either happening the same time as theirs, or just before. So, I don't think it really matters either way which one you do first, since the story events from both Portia and Sandrock clearly seem to be happening roundabout the same time.
One of the Portia charas will visit Sandrock later on and it was exciting to see them again and there's some mention about Portia.

Other than that it's a totally different game. But once you play Sandrock I don't think you can play Portia anymore because Sandrock is improved in every way.

I wouldn't go that far, because Portia is still a very good game with a great story and likable characters that's worth playing, but I do agree that the gameplay experience, mechanically speaking, is reeeeeal rough compared to Sandrock.

Yeah I meant it like you can play Portia first then Sandrock, but you can't do the other way and play Sandrock first then go to Portia, because it'll be real hard to "downgrade" to Portia.

Portia was so good that I bought Sandrock on day 1 EA, I love it, and when Mint (my Portia husband) came to Sandrock I went back to hang out at my Portia farm and I was like dang, did I really play 100hr like this? I'm SO spoiled now. LOLLL

That is true. I've tried again and again, but Portia now is SUCH A PAIN! It becomes less fun and more of a chore and i'm not playing a game to NOT have fun
