Animal Breeding
I want to start by saying I love this game. My wife and I have played many farming life sims, from the Harvest Moons, to the Stardew Valleys and far beyond, and this one has quickly became one of my favorite, if not my favorite, in the genre.

However, the fact that there doesn't seem to be animal breeding blows me away... It's something that has been in even the worst of the farming sims.

Am I wrong? I'd love to be, I just can't find anything that says you can breed animals at all. We're just starting year two, and it seems that even after I have a rooster and a hen, I will only ever get eggs and feathers and be able to sell them. No fertilized eggs, no baby chicks.

So I just buy baby animals, raise them and sell them? My wife and I were both gushing about the fun we were having until we learned this. It hasn't stopped us from playing or enjoying the game, but the game now seems to be lacking basic ranch farming mechanics.

I am still pretty new to Sandrock, so maybe I'm jumping the gun and assuming? Or are the devs planning on adding this in the future?

This is correct. This is not a farming sim, the closest you get to a farming mechanic is very basic plant growing. However, this is a fantastic cozy rpg.

ETA: If you are playing multiplayer with your spouse you are both missing out on some amazing content. The real shine for this game is the single player story.

Thanks for the reply! Yeah we really enjoy this game for what it is, and go into each game like it with an open mind and low expectations. I was just surprised that they had so much content, but were missing what seemed like a basic part of the genre, even in the crappy low budget titles. Still, it's only something I'd like to see, it's not a game breaker by any means. I really enjoy playing Sandrock.

Oh so my wife and I take turns playing full days in single player. We each have our own play style, so one day will be primarily an epic day of fighting monsters, exploring ruins and sparring with the locals, and the next day will be a nice day of organizing, farming and taking care of the household related stuff. It works quite well, really!

The player is a builder rather than a farmer. Farming mechanics are a side feature, akin to the fishing mechanics. Both are required by a few quests but are not the player character's profession.

The mounts and pets are a lot more fleshed out and useful though, if animals are your thing. Pets were actually a big focus of of the latest update.

That sounds so lovely! But it also made me think of that Shirley Jackson story "One Ordinary Day, With Peanuts". Sort of.

Late to the game but I feel ya OP. It would be nice to have animal breeding. Yes, the focus of the game is building but tailoring, cooking, crafting in general and even cleaning play a big part in it. For those things, a steady supply from animals would be great. Even better is the gol that could be made from breeding your animals. Buying an animal to "beef it up" and sell at a higher price is basically the same thing except you need to buy it first. So instead of 100% profit from selling an animal that was the result of breeding, you start out with an investment in a purchased animal. Not a deal breaker by any means. But it would be fun to have breeding.

We still had a blast with the game, and sank many hours into it. It still felt like something was missing throughout our play though. Having a breeding system just seems like it would fit so naturally into the game, and give a dynamic that would only improve on an already great game.

I don't mind buying, waiting a few days and selling for profit, but it feels disconnected in a way. There is something extra about breeding, naming and raising your own animals.

Like you said though, not a deal breaker. It would just be fun to have.
