What to do if updates break mods?

Is it a simple matter of uninstalling/reinstalling, or does it just brick my game for good?

Usually it breaks the mod until the mod developer updates it to work with changes in the game. Or you can remove the broken mod. So, let's say for example you installed a mod that lets your character move faster and the Dec 1 hotfix broke it. Most likely the game will run just fine, but the effects of the mod will not be applied. If the mod developer released an update to the mod today, you'd just overwrite the old one and restart the game, at which point the mod effect should be applied again.

It should be extremely rare that a mod would brick a game save. The only one of those available that I would think might do this are the ones that let you marry multiple people at the same time.

That's exactly the mod I want. Can I get around breaking the game by watching for updates and waiting to load the game until the mod update matches the game update? Will the mods update automatically, or do I have to jump through some hoops?

You generally have to manually update mods. Most are applied at runtime, but if one of them makes some kind of change to the game's save file, all bets are off. It may not even be enough that the mod is updated in those cases.

I have the YTAS Lovers mod. It was updated yesterday . I was a bit overzealous and have like 8 spouses. I want to divorce some of them because it's just too many people in my house. Whenever I try to divorce someone (after confirming they are set to my main spouse) and then go to bed that night, it hangs on the sleep loading screen and I won't wake up. I'm afraid to remove that particular mod because I feel all hell will break loose.
