Why does this game warn you?
So, I started my first play through on single player yesterday, and when I made an axe immediately went down and tried to chop down a cactus, because technically it's not a tree, or at least in my eyes.

Upon chopping down said cactus, the fat dude in yellow came up to me, and said I was not allowed to cut down tree's. So the entire first character I had, I avoided chopping them down like the plague.

So today when I hopped on, I figured I wanted to test out Multiplayer, and so made a new character/town upon opening it up. Was easy enough to gather materials to make an axe, and Pickaxe, but it's what happened next that through me for a spin.

I had accidentally chopped down a cactus plant, and to my surprise, nothing happened.

So, I started a new single player game because I had to make sure it wasn't some silly exclusive thing to multiplayer, and after getting the exact same cutscene for chopping down a cactus, I continued to do so, and nothing happened! I spent so long chopping down bushes on my main file, just to realize I could have been chopping down the cacti all this time, rather than gathering wood one by one.

So why is it that the fat man in yellow warns you about this, and pretty much scares off people from chopping down Cactus plants in the first place? This seems like an insanely stupid warning, considering you've done nothing wrong in the first place.

This honestly should be changed, and or removed from the game, unless you chop down a "real" tree.

I'm glad I know better now though, I've pretty much spent 2 hours, in comparison to my other file's 7 hours, finding this out now.

Sisal trees are ok, they aren't counted as in the "city area", wich most means the Eufala Savage and the Workshop areas. But you'll need a good axe for it, so why not cut the deadtrees first?

I remember being told the truth, that you are forbidden to cut trees down in the town area, but everywhere else is ok. I also remember being told that you can cut them down near the town if you're careful and no-one is around. So I don't see the problem?

When cutting down sisal trees, they actually appear under "bush" in the encyclopedia, so "tree" is actually misleading (maybe on purpose?)
Yea, I already have an iron axe and cut the dead trees before just exploring over there :D

There 2 trees missing in the encyclopedia so far, so I assume everything listed there under tree is a no-go and every "bush" (even when called tree) is save.

It's said to be logged anyway, if you cut trees down, even if noone sees you, and that this might have consequences later.

There's a scene during a certain point in the game where you can chose a certain dialog option. It talks about trees you cut down. I never cut down trees in town yet Burgess said I had cut down like 43 trees or something (all outside town/watchful eyes). However there were more pressing matters at the time than my need of resources.

you'll still get a bad report at end game and on a specific quest, people will throw bad words at you for doing so, but that's mostly it.
Can you confirm this counts for trees "outside" of the city? Say for example where the Rockyenarolls are? So, east of the city, north/east of Grand Mesa?

Yes. I cut down 0 trees in the bad area, and still got taken to task (so to speak) for the 7 I cut down outside of it.

I found it annoying too. I made this mistake in the beta. I made it again at full release. A cactus is not a tree. If you want it to be included in the restriction, announce it when you arrive in the city (that you can't cut cacti either, not just trees).

It's also mentioned later in the game when the church guy accuses you of cutting trees. Burges says they saw you do it. Wouldn't have happened if you got the warning before doing it.
Originally the standing deadwood trees also counted as forbidden. Dunno if a dead tree's roots can technically still prevent desertification just a bit. In any case that got scrapped so all dead trees may be chopped down at will.
that would have been wild as that's the only source of hardwood you have pre-bridge

dead trees are useful for real life ecosystems for sure, but i'd never expect to see that in a game as a 'don't cut down trees' kind of way

You'll only get a 100 or 200 Gols fine and reputation loss with burgess if he see you doing it. However, even if nobody see, you'll still get a bad report at end game and on a specific quest, people will throw bad words at you for doing so, but that's mostly it.

And I think "Sisal trees" are not part of those trees you're not allowed? (5 month old reddit posts only lists Cactus Tree, Cactus Flower Tree and Dry Boxtree)
interestingly, as you need boxtree wood for some redesign for furniture, those two Dry Boxtrees just north of the Salvage Yard don't actually count as 'city perimeter'

you do need a bit of strategic fence climbing tho

the sisal trees most definitely don't count as city zone

The way I went about it was that...

If I Could See The Town - The Town Could See Me

Haven't made it to the ending yet so I can't wait to see my results lol

It was weird, during that scene in town Burgess said maybe he had to warn me once (which he didn't) then said I didn't cut down any trees. (I cut down none in or around town)

At the end when it gives your stats, it said I cut down 43 trees :P So I guess the end must count any tree anywhere, which is wrong, cause you can't finish the game cutting down nothing. :steamfacepalm:

is there a way to complete the game without cutting down sissel trees or acacia trees? i don't think its possible to get the resources from those two types of trees any other way

Acacia trees you could avoid, the thorny jumpers in that area sometimes drop a piece, or in a sandstorm the ones anywhere could. (depends on creature level) That would be a huge grind to get what you need though.

Sissel trees, nope no getting around that. Only place to get sissel is from the trees that I ever found.

Sisal Trees are called trees, but are actually listed as bushes. So they should be safe (no guarantee, as I'm not far enough yet to confirm myself, both others already confirmed)

Unless you really meant Sissel and this is something else than Sisal

Sisal trees are free since them grows at the Valley of Wispers and The Wastelands, wich means out of the restricted area. In matter of fact, the only "trees" (cacti included) that are forbiden are those in the city limits: near the workshop and near the Eufala Savage.

Edit: even on the final report of your journey, there will be no mention to the trees you cut outside the city limits. I did cut several flower cacti in the Desert near the Gekko ruins and none of them where registered.

The ones you can't cut are labeled "Flower Cactus Tree", the small ones Burgess won't warn you about unless you chop one of the ones in the fenced in area near the oasis... which you shouldn't be in anyways, they fenced it off for a reason.
