I forget at what point in the story they become available.
With the Factory you need to place MACHINES inside. You need to place it on the Tool Bar (Hot key) and I THINK Even when moving while inside. The key thing to look for is when placing the machine down you want a blue line to momentarily appear pointing to the inside console. if that doesn't happen, I don't THINK its placed right.
You use the console (Inside or Outside one) to tell it to make something. You will see two sliders. Cycles and Quantity. Quantity is how many you want made. Cycles is how many Machine Threads you want to devote to making that quantity. So say you have 5 cycles available (The left side should contain summeries for individual catagories.). You can devote 1-5 Cycles to making a Quantity of items. Any unused Cycles can be used to make other items.
You can add additional Machines to improve the amount of cycles you have.
In my current play through I have a nice sized Balcony outside my Indoor Kitchen where I placed my Cook station and drying Rack(s). With my Rattan Furniture it makes a nice little setup.
It gets them off the Dirt.
As you can see from the answer, factories and greenhouses are not yet implemented on console.
