I'm sure they'll fix this oversight at some point. But for now:
I keep offsetting the negatives by interacting with him, giving him a present every day and then (switching between worms and opals when I can find them) sending him out to get stuff everyday SHOULD offset the -5 relationship ((I think it's that much)) you get every time he doesn't have a bed.
But that's just a temp fix. The mission you need (as of right now) to unlock the beds is How to Tune your Banjo - this mission requires you to have completed BOTH the missions: "in Trusses we Trust" and "Mint Condition" so that the mission with Banjo appears
I hope that helps. I know it isn't a big help, but it's what I got for now. If I discover an early bed later, I'll come back and comment again. As for now, best thing to do is just try to offset any negatives your pet has until you can unlock the beds. Sounds like a chore, but if you're not sending them out to fetch stuff you're missing out anyways, and who DOESN'T like cuddling them every morning? ;)
Though Crochet comment works best to offset the -5 , as it was the only thing I could think of to offset it, and cuddling them is pretty awesome.
@Crochet_Hook Thanks so much for your detailed comment, for now it looks like I'll have to just take your suggestion and offset with gifts and interaction. I didn't know my foxy likes worms, those aren't too bad to find so that's going to help a lot.
