What do sandstorms actually do?
There doesn't seem to be a difference whether I wear the hat or not. I don't lose any HP or stamina and I seem to move at normal speed.

If you don't activate the special sandstorm barrier, it can blow away items from the machines when they are completed

In addition, it will cause your dew collectors to quickly lose any stored dew, and sand to build up on your machines faster. You also see some more powerful enemies show up, like the Yakmel Pen talks about when showing up during the first sandstorm that's over by Paradise Lost.

As far as the player is concerned, there's no penalty. You don't take damage or lose stamina or anything like that.

if all it does is affect your machines and stuff, what's the point of sand gear?

There used to be a clear penalty for being out in a sandstorm without being properly dressed. Your stamina would decrease rapidly. That effect was removed since some of the kickstarter backers didn't like it. So now its a cosmetic thing that the character is encumbered by getting sand in the eyes but that's about it.

so stupid. i hate gamers, and I hate it more when developers cater to their whining. it's not like storms happen that often. all you have to do is put on a hat. ridiculous.

Sandrock actually improved a lot by the player feedback it got. E.g. sandfishing was quite bad in the first two versions of it, now its completely fine. But yeah the ball was dropped on this one.

Dunno if it's because there's an early mission with Pen that takes place during the first sandstorm but yeah it's no biggie using the sandgear. The first type of sandgear is quite ugly though.

I've always wondered this myself. Sandgear seems pointless. I can't figure out what it does.

Originally if your character exited the front door and hadn't got sandgear on during a sandstorm, the stamina would rapidly drain. Wearing it meant that your character would behave normally and stamina would no longer drain. But the basic sandgear looks horrible so it was bad for screenshots. I think the excuse some people had was that they'd stored it away in a chest so it was unfair that their stamina dropped because of that. It was just a lame excuse. We also got the "show hat" toggle in the settings because some people wanted to hide the sandgear on screenshots.

On the other hand some of the later versions of sandgear, I think some of the goggles, said in the item description that they worked during sandstorms but actually didn't. Not sure if that ever got straightened out.

I've been in EA for a long time and never encountered the stamina drain. It does seem silly to remove it and then have sandgear. Oh well. 🤷‍♀️

There are no enemies to worry about in storms, just that one Pen kills. Nothing has ever been added since then (though I did find a strange new creature out in the desert since a few updates ago with no context as to when or why it's there - but the sandstorms have nothing to do with it).

I have noticed that picking up litter during or after a sandstorm gets you different items - this is a very new update and it's a nice edition for early game as it costs no stamina to pick up trash.

This game has come a long way from where it started and EA players have had quite an impact on the game overall. I can't say I agree with everything everyone had to say, but I'd say our input greatly improved the game overall. And the developers did a really outstanding job with feedback and listening to EA players.

Overall the MTA games are chill, relaxing games to play, not survival games, so things were simplified in some areas for that reason.

My first sandstorm yesterday there were aggressive higher level monsters allll over the area outside my house and near the mine. Did you roll over an EA game because they definitely are supposed to be there post-launch?

I am playing my EA game, but I haven't hit a sandstorm since the the full launch. Guess I'll find out in a few game days as I have one incoming. Cool! I've wanted this! :cat_cool:
Do the sandstorms blow away items you have in your inventory as well, or only the stuff sitting finished in your crafters?

Just the stuff on your machines, nothing in your chests.

What about the stuff you carry on you, in your inventory/backpack?
