The main story would probably have to be completely reworked to make local co-op work.
Point in case, stardew valley was single player for awhile and saw good sales, then when they added multiplayer /split screen the game exploded in sales.
Same goes for Valheim, was single player at first and then exploded with sales after multiplayer.
Same with minecraft (yes im that old to remember the starting minecraft where it was a couple years before multiplayer was added)
I could list more but i’m sure you get the point. Games now a days for younger generations and the millennials getting older tend to gravitate towards team/group/multiplayer type environments as the sense of work/life balance puts more emphasis on finding ways to do things and play games with family members and friends instead of lonely solo play in a dark basement with cheetos and energy drinks.
