You guys share one builder workshop. Money is shared and main story progression and rewards are shared too. When you submit materials for quests, both can submit until you have enough. But you can do solo relationships with npcs and as the server is online, your friend can go offline while you continue playing.
Didn't the whole prequel bit for MP get scrapped months ago?
For example Arvio and Amirah haven't moved in yet; you have to build their shop for them. Cooper doesn't have a mount shop yet and you have to build it etc. Fang/his clinic doesn't exist yet, but it's part of the main quest to build it. There's other builders still in this town because it hasn't all gone to ♥♥♥♥♥ yet.
