I believe you have to have a certain level with them to interact with them, though it isn't high. Also this will put you in a cut scene showing your player petting the animal. You will need to hit escape ( or if on controller, whichever button opens the save/exit menu) to get out of it.

Meerket - pet, alternating shiny scorpion and bloodstone

For the gift fatigue, is there a way to keep track of what you gave them the day before? Also, is alternating between two gifts enough?
I have to shake my head at the devs being so reluctant to let the dew collectors be good for the longest time and then make magical pets that give 10 dew collectors worth of water daily.
