sandfishing sucks

I throw bait, aim directly on fish and NEVER catch one, even if the trap lands right over them. is this just the way fishing is going to be or will you ever actually be able to catch a fish

To cast the sandfish trap, the player needs to approach a fishing spot, identified by the ⁠Fishing Spot ico.png⁠ Fishing Spots icon on the map and a quicksand pit in the overworld.
The player needs to select a bait by highlighting the option.
Use the mouse to aim and left-click to toss the bait out. The bait will slowly sink into the sand and eventually disappear over time.
Fish will approach the bait and stop to eat it. The player needs to then switch to the sandfish trap.
While holding left-click, use the mouse to aim the trap. A circle will appear and the fish will be highlighted if aimed properly.
Release the left-click to deploy the trap before the fish flees.

i did all that (with a controller) multiple times and not even close to catching a fish

and no fish fled, AT ALL. tthey just dont get caught

You first throw the bait and then switch to the trap and put it on the bait, wait for the fish start nibbling on the bait, then put the trap on the fish and the fish should be highlighted, then release the trap.

like I said, I have done all this. it doesnt do anything. nobody thinks this is a needlessly complicated process? on a controller its even worse. i have to use dpad to swap between everything in my toolbar. regardless of that. the video showed me nothing I wasn't already doing. the only difference is when i do it, i dont catch anything...ever. so either the game is just ignoring my actions, (unliekly since the bait does get dropped) or it has decided to choose just me to not work for. sorry if I sound snippy, I am frustrated because I can't finish this quest.

Thanks. I gave on that quest for now because of my difficulty doing it, and now have a much bigger problem. I am trapped in a mine with no stamina because I didn't bring food and didn't realize how odd tthis process was going to be either. DO i just shut the game down?

no. I can try it if I ever get out of this mine. So long as i don't have to walk with WASD i am okk with mouse and keyboard lol

Clicking M and R isn't working to leave the mine? (that's for keyboard, but clicking whatever you need to show the map should have the option there to leave too - never tried myself)

i somehow managed to simply wander out. replenishing stamina doesn't seem to happen when I eat, if thats what im even doing. for all I know i am just throwing food away. i know i click thjings and they just disappear. health was full but eating didn't bring up stamina at all, so i am starting to think i have to buy food in saloon to ever get stamina, which is kind of irritating

Only certain foods will replenish stamina. Different foods have different effects like restoring health or boosting some stat or skill. Select the food and read the descriptions.

I am so done with trying to fish in this game. I do EVERYTHING it says to do and NEVER catch anything. so either this mechanic isn't working, or its just the worse fishing mechanic ever buiit, I land RIGHT on them and never caught one. Im sick of trying to do this stupid quest
