You can use a helper, if you have one, to assign tasks to the pets if your helper has the Pet Management function.
You can use the pet whistle, found only on the Action menu (TAB key on PC), to summon a pet, so you don't have to go searching for it.
Meerkat doesn't run off in the morning. I don't know about Banjo. Coco usually sleeps at her assigned pet bed during the day unless you wake her up.
... I completely forgot about the whistle.
Gonna check out the home assessment board too, so thanks for telling me about that, I didn't know it had that kind of function.
Funny enough, Coco is awake all day for me, though they usually settle down in a cactus near the ranch, so tracking them down hasn't been too much of a problem.

I have nothing against real life meerkats, but the in-game one looks nothing like them. Honestly I don't like it at all and avoid interacting with it because of that. Same reason I don't buy any rabbits in Sandrock.
