I don't really usually get as far as hating characters, but he's just such an obnoxious, petulant, pompous, arrogant, entitled, inconsiderate, rude little brat. >:T
The things that were supposed to be endearing made me hate him more.
But once you get his friendship up high enough... well... he gets a little better... they did a super fantastic job making him obnoxious and hateable, though.
Flashforward to now: the dude's my favorite character. So you know, everything can change. And even if it won't for you, as long as disliking Qi does not cause you real-life stress, everything's fine!
I will say that he does have a connection to an old friend that is somewhat endearing.
"Oh, you managed not to screw up what I asked you to do. You can go away, I have adult things to tend to. What's that? You want access to the thing you just built with the parts you meticulously fabricated, after risking your life gathering the materials?! This is a serious piece of equipment, I won't risk some of your ignorance rubbing off on its greatness. I suppose you could 'look' at it from time to time with your primitive and uneducated eyes since you built it, but that's it."
Not a verbatim statement, but this is how Qi talks to you. It was funny at first, but after being forced to deal with him in several main story missions and watching his interactions with others, it became a full blown hatred. If I could skip all of the story involving him, I definitely would.
This is all in light-hearted fun. I agree with others on Cooper and Pen, but I can tolerate them for the most part. In every game, there's at least one character that rubs people the wrong way. For me, that character is the NPC known as Qi.
Pen reminds me of Captain Hammer from Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog.
I would kick that cat like a football if i could ... lazy ass
100% he is this. The tipping point for me was when I got him to 4 hearts and he started saying that one line where he's saying "I've noticed you're always frittering away the hours scurrying about chattering away with the natives while I'm in here making progress. How quaint." basically. It's like, you know. He's supposed to be your friend at that point and he goes from being dismissive to being insulting. Very good character development.
People are excusing him by saying he's the awkward nerd type. No. He's a jerk. Dr. Xu is the awkward nerd type. Fang is the awkward nerd type. Qi is the pompous academic who thinks he's better than everyone else. I know a couple guys like this in real life. You meet 'em all the time in my profession. They aren't cute, they're just rude and have refused to acknowledge that they have no social skills as they see communicating with those of inferior intellect to be below their station.
I mean, yeah, he's just a video game character and in the grand scheme of things I don't care, but come on lol. He's literally the worst romance candidate.
This was exactly the vibe I got from him at first too.
Once you get to know him better, though, he's alright. At least his complex comes from this desire to help and protect the people of Sandrock, unlike Qi whose complex comes from being entitled. He's a little arrogant, but he also is the highest level NPC I've fought, so... I guess he's earned it a bit.
Qi is one of my BFFs and he turns out to be quite nice. He acknowledges that he is a social dud, and he tries hard to pay compliments and to be entertaining. I haven't dated anyone yet but will see what he's like when I get around to dating people.
Fang is interesting, he is the only character who never moves his lips, even when he does speak. I love his voice. It will be interesting how he develops. Maybe he can't talk and uses something to make a voice? Who knows.
Cooper doesn't bother me, he's just a farmer and doesn't much engage in niceties.
Qi has the highest friendship with me, followed by X. I went out of my way to improve my friendship with him because I was tired of him being a jerk and I knew he'd warm up if I got his hearts up. :)
I like his attempts at compliments, honestly.
Still, I can't forget how much I hated him in all of his quests lol.
I hope Fang's voice sounds the same in the final. I really like it and think it suits his shy nerd personality. I think they said they were going to re-record everything, though. The lips not moving I think is probably just because they haven't finished the rig/animation.
