Finish the Geegler story mission and finish the bridge.
1) Missions (quests) are a must. You need the cash, and you need the exp.
2) Talk to everyone, don't dodge any conversations (many lead to important quests). Seek people out to talk to them. Run around and check out ever vendor so you know what's for sale where (I hated this part, and resented I had to do it).
3) You must focus on getting the recycler and furnace made. This game is very lean on making that clear. And understand water is your fuel (I just justify it as steam) learn how the recycler and furnace work ... I found them very clumsy from a user interface standpoint ... the + and autofill is for water, it has nothing to do with materials. Know the the machines do nothing instantly, they take time. So when you recycle that wood to boards, that time you see is how long its going to take for the machine to finish.
Also, you can work from your chests, you don't always have to have you stone or wood on you to make the next tier item (bricks, wood sticks, etc).
4) Make LOTS of container chests ... just run around gather all the wood you can and make chest to store crap in, this game, very early on, has a huge "item count" for crafting. Also in your inventory, the "SORT ALL" button will be your friend, get used to it soon.
5) Did I tell you to do the missions? LMAO! Do the missions (quests) in Yan's office ... this is HUGE, you need to do those missions to get money and get exp. Also doing missions for people seem to lower their prices of the items they sell to you (everyone seems to be a merchant). Also, water can be purchased, and you may need to do that early on ... but it takes money from the missions you finish!
6) Engage (talk to) everyone ... its how you get important game advancing quests ... such as the cranes ... you want to build those cranes.
7) Why do you want to build the cranes? So you can get down into the dungeons where you start getting to some (some is a key word) important stuff ... not the least of which are data discs which you can trade with the research guy get to get better machines. NOTE: Researching a machine DOES NOT immediately give it to you .... it takes X number of days for it to be researched, and you will be sent mail telling you that you can now build it.
FINALLY: If all that info is not enough ... to get you where you need to be, you can buy every low level part in the game and I even think its intentional from the devs that you have to (maybe to force you to earn money through missions?) ... because, for example, to upgrade my pickaxe, I found myself part locked ... e.g. I needed a part I could not make, I had to buy it, in order to get to where make the machine to make the part). The blacksmith is your friend ... if you have enough money.
And know I'm talking out my butt here, I just started playing last night.
The geegler story collapses the bridge that you have to fix before you can cross to the mines.
It does make sense, before the Geegler mission they are constantly patrolling the bridge so you cannot cross. The Geegler story line forces their hand and clears then off the bridge...by destroying it :-)
-- This is incorrect, recycler forge, etc use fuel (most basic is dregs) that's what the autofill on them is for (or you can manually fill them with X on controller - not sure on keyboard key). Water is used to cool your various crafting machines due to the desert heat. You can have a machine thats full of fuel but wont run because your water tank is empty, or have a full water tank and the machine not run because its out of fuel. You can see on the water tank what the consumption rate of water is to cool each machine when its running.
Fuel and water are only actually consumed while the machines are running to make something.
Basically most machines need 3 inputs - the materials to build the item, fuel to power the process and water to keep it cooled.
You make better Tools at the workbench. or Upgraded Workbench. Bronze (Copper and Tin) can be aquired from Eurolola Ruins. Iron will become available as you progress the story. In all cases you need sharpening Stones which can be bought from Huego at the Blacksmith (near the stage at the blue moon saloon.)
I 100% concur with all of this. You should make this a guide. Not kidding. It would be a great resource for people who are just starting the game.
