Farming is not possible on day 1, when you first start. Eventually, (for me, it was on day 11 after starting) you'll get an Event/Mission regarding the Moisture Farm and Zeke. The reward from that is your first planting kit, which, after you activate/use/consume it, you can now do farming on your own plot.
It's possible the other story line Events (Picking Up the Slack, The Show Must Go On, Farewell Party, Cover Your Glass, Pitching In, The Old Man and the Tree, Moisture Farm Blues) must all be completed first, however long that takes each player, rather than being on day 11.
Cooking is not possible on day 1, when you first start. If you research the Drying Rack, it is the next item you can research after that in the progression of that series of diagrams. It's called 'Apprentice Cooking Station'.
However, the research for that item is not on the default research tab/page (the Gear Icon) but rather, on the secondary research tab/page (the Wrench Icon). If you had the Discs to give to Qi to do the research with appropriate speed-ups, I suppose you could potentially unlock Cooking on day 3.
For me, I didn't even notice the second tab for research items, and was waiting for some Event or Mission to reveal the Cooking Station. So, at least you can get it sooner than I did, if that's a goal for you.
Once you have the Refiner machine, you will start to see quality based Commissions. This can be.. a bit surprising the first time around, as you have to pay attention to the background color of the item(s) being requested in the order.
In some cases, they are quite costly (in materials) to create at quality, especially many items, so caution is advised. As a consequence, I had to actually abandon a Commission, (*gasp*) so hopefully you can avoid that, although the penalty isn't terrible if you have to.
If these turn out to be all false, now with EA, I'll edit this post to reflect the changes when I've had a chance to play through again.

EDIT: Cooking related.
I've got the Apprentice Cooking Station, and have started the process of discovering recipes by experimentation.
The recipe discovery process is .. not reliable in the sense that if you put the same ingredients in, using the same Save, it does not discover the same recipe.
I'm not sure if this is currently a Bug or intentional, because I can't imagine a reason why you would want to make discovery random, considering all the discovery ingredients are lost each time you try. That would make cooking discovery 100% punitive, so for the moment, I'm going to presume it's just a bug, until the developers confirm Cooking recipe discovery is working as intended.
In which case, I see no viable path forward for "normal" players to discover anything reliably, because if you get the Apprentice Cooking Station, and put the ingredients into the appropriate Cooking Tool (initially, either the Steamer or the Cooking Pot) it sometimes discovers the recipe, and sometimes doesn't.
Sometimes the order of ingredients appears to matter, sometimes not.
Sometimes you have to add a whole bunch of extra ingredients that don't seem to matter, and then maybe, possibly, it might discover a recipe?
And the best part? None of the discovery combinations seem to have any relationship, bearing, correlation, tie, or resemblance to the ingredients required on the ACTUAL recipe, after it's discovered. That's right, what you put in for discovery? Often, not even slightly the same as the real recipe. Again, I don't know if this is a bug, or just punitively working as intended, but it's a random mess, at the moment.
In my experience, it's an extremely annoying and frustrating mechanic at the moment (2022-05-28), so for other players, unless you find out something I am missing, I wouldn't waste a whole bunch of ingredients on discovery.
It's possible there is a Luck stat factor at play here, as well, or some other "try x random times with y ingredients" punitive RNG. I have no idea.
Having said that, here's what Cooking Recipe discoveries worked for me, once, but inconsistently / never again: It's entirely possible exactly none of them will work for you, because of what I mention above.

So, to recap, what I've done to try and reproduce these discoveries is obtain the diagram for the Apprentice Cooking Station, built it, then put these combinations into it. Then, reload the save, and try again. It.. doesn't work consistently, for me. YMMV! On the other hand, I was able to discover some recipes.. so.. not a complete waste of time.

Here a spreadsheet of the actual recipe ingredients, after discovery, as of 2022-05-29:

I'll update the spreadsheet as I find more/newer/updated recipes.
I've started putting all this info into a Steam guide as it was getting longer than i originally anticipated. Will format the guide later once I come up for air.
3 hours to go ...
I'm ready to celebrate with you all ...
Great writeup with well-targeted subjects, 0d1!
Use it to keep your workshop machines free of sand,
Take it with you when exploring, you'll need it to expose treasure chests.
yes, that's a really excellent comment.
If you don't have a timer on any accepted commissions then that's a good time to spend a couple of days gathering resources. Keep an eye on the calendar so you don't miss important events and meetings though.
Look on the map for characters that have jobs to be done.
>> Run out of resources?
>> Check the fuel.
>> Check the water level in the water tank
Buy more from Burgess at Water World and/or craft dew collectors to use in the workshop yard.
>> Perhaps they need a clean with the feather duster to remove the sand.
Shoot the lit cross-hairs above (some) doors to open them to reveal a new area to explore.
In the early days running out of Stamina is a constant problem.
If you don't want to sleep to refresh then either get more or do activities that don't require stamina.
There are seats, benches and chairs around town that can be used.
Slow regeneration.
Instant regeneration but can get expensive.
Have a look at the items info for further details.
Clothes, weapons etc
Get resources and have some fun.
When you clear an area of a ruin there is an option to reset - for a fee.
There are multiple copies of all the pieces, use the goggles to identify them among the ore. Different ruins have different pieces to collect.
The WIKI page has been started so more info will be added.

Different levels of tiredness, how to recover, etc?
What is the best time to get to bed?
Anytime before 24:00 from what I've noticed. It says you might not recover all of your stamina after that time, but something I notice the game doesn't tell you directly [gotta go to your character page to see] is it gives you an EXP boost for a day following, and a +20 luck bonus for sleeping before midnight.
I've cut the timer REALLY close a few times already just to test it, and that's what conclusion I've drawn from it. Hope it helps ya.
