Tips for lone wolf achievement?
I was thinking of trying this, but given the fact you only use one merc, would it be better to go with an IMP or just buy a merc to use instead since the upkeep cost is mostly irrelevant when you only pay for one anyway. If so what merc would be best suited for this job? I'm also open for weapon suggestions, if any. Mostly looking to make this as painless as possible while still retaining some fun of the challenge.

Blood can get up to the President and take that place out solo in the first few weeks.
Experience seems to be split over the entire team so if you finish some things on your own you will be max level really fast. That makes things easier.
Big teams level up really slow and solo you will be getting 1800+ xp for some quests. Some are too hard. I wouldn't even try Biff or the refugee camp solo and keeping that crazy old lady alive when she sticks her nose in is impossible. IF you get in trouble just leg it out of the zone. Blood has high mobility so it's easy. Wastes time if you are doing the timed achievement but I doubt you can get that solo just with the amount of travel involved.

If you only use Blood (never let him lapse while you mod weapons and stuff with someone else) then you are quite limited in what you can do with him as he cannot mod anything and with low wisdom finding crowbars and such is really not going to happen. Pretty suck but even so I left the last quest conversation for ages while I went around exploring a lot of the game alone and it's not too hard.

I think I got a little lucky with the President area. I got half the enemies stealth and then got in a fight, ran for a mounted machine gun and they all came to me. None went up and killed the President. I have done this with groups and the brain dead President just sits somewhere and soaks up bullets till you fail. Something to keep in mind for anyone trying it.

If you can get him a HG21? Even unmodded he wields it like a friggin champion. I found that out too late in the game to be overly useful but there you go. Might do well with an MG42(?) and you can get that early on.

I would NOT use an IMP merc. You really want someone with a special ability and unless they change it so IMP mercs can select something, be it a unique weapon, unusual perk or useful item that makes them special they are going to suck hard. There is no stat distribution that you can give them that will do anything but leave you with a very, very average character. Their bonus is that they are free and that's just not enough.
Melee with health perks. Imp merc with hit chance melee perk, and interrupt melee one perk which is just mental in some situations (you want to close gap almost every encounter). Plus movement perks from agi i think. And I did solo Biff event last night ( on hardest), all wwaves, but honestly Biff died and I dont think you can defend him solo on hardest. Mortars targeting him almost all the time, he is dead man walking. I was already 10 lvl. Capping mine triggering this event, so dont do it before gettin 10 lvl, you get plenty of xp from qustes, refugee camp ismustgo at somepoint. At this point i can kill 4-5 enemies per turn, and sonetimes starting turns with 21 action points full healrh due to grit, and 50% more dmg due to injuries....dont watetalents for stealth perks, if you want some stealth fun Camo chest is enough.

Any tips for management? How to defend area and towns? What's better to do in general?
I think for this achievement its only meant to finish the game not worry about anything else right, or is it possible to do the May 1st achievement along with this one i would guess its possible but will be tricky?

Why not Magic ?
Can't get Gold right away but i guess you can de-hire your first merc after the ability to get gold hm

I have some info that can be useful for people trying to win the game solo. In my last playthrough i had tested some good loot hotspots and found that they do not appear to be dependant on story progression. One can just finish Ernie island solo and go straight to K16 fort and speak with the colonel there, this allows you to interact with intendants in the fort, one of those gives you PSG-1 sniper rifle with 100% garantee, second one gives you some good grenades and his room is full of crates with more. Also if one has good intelligence, room with colonel contains decorative globe that can be opened to get AA-12 auto shotgun and some magasines, as well as several aniques that can be sold in Cacao later. I suggest evading all encounters on the way and make a route H2 -> J8 -> I10 -> K12 -> K16. Where will be one fight on the way at abandoned factory at K14, which is another hotspot for good loot, you can savescum entry to this location to get one of the following: Steyr Aug, AKSU, AR-15, Minimi LMG, PSG-1, C4 explosives & remote dets, AA-12, good body armor and stuff like that. You can get this trip right when you get access to the sea and start usual progression through the game, but with PSG-1, Minimi, 40 mm greanades, good armor even before you take your first steps on the mainland... Easiet way to get back is K18 -> K12 -> J11 -> D11 (bridge port) where you will have to clear like 10 enemies to get access to sea again and redeploy in Savanna at F9 to resume your normal game progression. I think this may be of great help.

Another tip: when you liberate the outpost on Ernie, make sure you go in with recon data for the area. This will allow you to loot a crate near the top end of the ladder to minefield, containing sizeable amount of C4 exposive. When you get back to Ernie, if you have 50 explosive skill you can manufacture like 40~50 HE grenades for 40 mm grenade launcher attachment on your fav assault rifle. Do not underestimate those, they are very very strong and can be launched for great distances even without MGL with just simple rifle attachment. Having like 50 of those from the start can help immensly in the early game, or you can keep those for tougher situations and engagements later.

I just finished it with the imp merc and melee-only build. It was quite fun to play. With the mobility traits, you can go in, chop off 2 heads, and then return to cover where they cannot reach you. If too many enemies come at once, then hide or run further away, as you are way faster than the enemies. I also got the time achievement since I went pretty straight to the main quests, not caring about anything else. Also the president died in my run.
Did anyone try Lone Wolf with Wolf? I mean Peter "Wolf" Sanderson?
I've been doing solo with Ivan. MI, savescumming as needed. He is 2/3rd done with bosses, Biff has been saved and the President has been rescued. The build is focused on melee, which leverages his AP bonus to allow him to clear entire squads in a turn, but Rage is actually the centerpiece perk, because Ivan starts with Beefed Up. So if he's going around with 5 wounds, he's not hugely disadvantaged in terms of HP, and having that plus some other damage/crit bonuses ensures that at max level, he can make melee one-shots 98% of the time, and the rest is covered by assuming save scumming. The hard part of the build is just in getting through the early game. Ivan's power weapon is the machine gun and until you get one, it's tough to get through the situations where the enemies are clustered up.

Ivan also can't repair anything or heal his own wounds, and his explosives skill is too low to consistently see and defuse mines. These are all serious problems that block many questlines and stop his build from being maxed out(always using salvaged gear is a pain), and suggest that one way to go would be to play the early game to earn money and then fire your early game merc to get an elite one with those other skills fleshed out.

If I had to do solo + Ironman I would cheese with a sniper and use retreats to gradually pick off large groups. No rescuing the president, no Biff.
