It just rocks with match ammo and is a rather surefire way to eliminate someone in the sights.
"best" depends on how you like to use it. Overall probably thermal, but if you have enough AP to get two headshots in with the quick prism then that may be a better tradeoff most of the time.
Explore all sectors, even those without enemies. You can find a few upgrade materials that way.
I didn't put the thermal-scope on the list, because I#m not sure the Kar98 is worth the "chip"-investment. What's your opinion of this rifle?
How many APs did you have?
Two shots with the Kar98 (without aim) costs 14 APs.
I found a modded Kar98 with scope, bipod and silencer and it serves me well. Didn't want to invest in a chip attachment either yet, I'm waiting for better rifles.
I sometimes have 14 AP, depending on morale bonuses. But I like to aim, so a 4AP rifle works better for me with two fully aimed shots or 3 unaimed shots at very close range. I'm still using a .44 rifle I found on the first island.
and yeah thermal is my favored scope on my best sniper rifles. the fact that you can shoot through fog without worrying about everything grazing is huge
It depends on your play style....
Do you find that you tend to be in position at the start of each turn ready to shoot from afar and you don't reposition that often, then the Prism scope could be quite good.
thermal is certainly really good for a natural marksman..... But lets say that live wire is using the gun she is not the best marksman wise so it could be better off for her to use a X10 scope to add to the aim bonus and give her a better chance to hit the head....
So Prism is great if your a bit of a camper that doesnt reposition enough and you have the AP to take advantage of a second shot...
Thermal is great to negate all the possible penaltys from cover to being at night etc but wont technically make your merc a better shot per say....
And x10 is better for a weak shot to make them a better shot
FYI I have never seen a Kar98 in game.... most of the rifles on got on the starter island where Gewehr's.... So this is making me think that loot is more random then I thought it was....
Splitting the ammo types used around your mercs is relaxing ammo constraints very much.
I have yet to find a suitable new sniper/dmr to replace the old world war Kar98 XD
no, you are right it is called "Gewehr 98" in game.
The equivalent in RL should be the Kar98.
Thanx for your ansers.
My favorite so far is the Winchester 1894 fully kitted out.... you need to put a barrel extension on it so it has proper range plus the x10 scope and the silencer

G98 (Gewehr 98) is a real life rifle and is the one in the game. K98 is the carabiner version (98 Karabiner) and is a later introduced modified version of G98, the differences are not that numerous, but they are there, the main one Kar 98 (K98) being shorter.
Man that thing is sexy.
Just as i wrote my previous post i looted an M24 in a fight and have since reaplaced the old sniper.
Scrapping the old gun for the chip was very lucky.
- Thermal for good sniper rifles (you can buy Dragunov from poachers already with thermal and it runs on very popular snipers)
- quick prism on anything else that can fit it and will be shot stationary (so smaller one-shotters, assault rifles).
As for itemization - I also complained, but this is due to game suggesting that you should go to Port Cacao next. DON'T. Go up, poacher camp, port next to A2 mine - and you get fun stuff. The quest from poacher camp alone can also get you some M24 (though I find Dragunov more handy)
