How do I know what is "light" armor?
There's a perk that gives you extra free movement if you have light or no armor on. However, armor doesn't say if it's light, medium or heavy etc anywhere in its description. I want to know what armors are excluded before I decide whether this perk is worth taking or not. Anyone have any ideas?

There are armors that say heavy, medium later. So i guess flak and possibly kevlar are light

"Penetration protection: light" just hover over the armor

Hm, I'm not so sure the penetration rating of the armor indicates if it is light armor or not. I.e. Flak armor has light penetration protection - kevlar is medium penetration protection. However, both armors seem to work with the free movement perk that is only supposed to work with "light armor". I don't think the penetration rating of the armor determines this.

I got other question - If say, penetration protection is heavy, does it defend from light and medium too? Logically it should defend from all "lighter" damage types.
Otherwise it'll be silly to get whacked from light penetration, when wearing heavy protection.

Penetration protection doesn't seem to be tied to whether the armour is light, or heavy - there's a special armour that's obtainable through a quest, that provides heavy penetration protection, but you retain your free movement with it.

Some armour, however, indicates that it's cumbersome - that you lose free movement with it (unless you take a tier 2 - i.e. 80 - strength perk).

Anything that isn't heavy or medium I think it's considered light. Although not sure if applying ceramic plates would change the weight category.

I did some testing and here's what I found.

There are four types of armor:
1) No armor - self explanatory
2) Light armor - Flak armor, Flak vest, Flak leggings, Light helmet, Light camo armor
3) Medium armor - Kevlar armor, Kevlar vest, Kevlar leggings, Kevlar helmet, Medium camo armor
4) Heavy armor - Heavy armor, Heavy armor leggings, Heavy armor helmet

Total AP and free move range are governed by Agility attribute. The more Agility a merc has - the more AP he has - the further he can move - the more free move range he has.
As far as basic free move range is concerned, no armor, light armor and medium armor are all the same.
Tested this on a merc with 93 Agility - while STANDING she had a free move range of 5 tiles. Now with the Fast Runner perk (which gives bonus free move range while wearing light or no armor) this increased to 7 tiles. My guess here is that this perk increases free move range by 50% rounded down.
Heavy armor has a "Cumbersome" attribute which removes any free move altogether. This is specifically stated in its description. If you have "Ironclad" perk (requires 80+ Strength) then you have half your normal free move while wearing heavy armor. So in our case that would be half of base 5 tiles (based on 93 agility) or 2 tiles rounded down,

Great info. Since lot of ppl go for sniper rifles, its good to note that m24, m82 , the gold fever rifle disable free move. So using PSG, Winchester or dragunov with light armor is best for that free move.

Excellent info, here's some addition to it:

-Deathsquad armor (obtainable through a quest) is a medium armor.
-The "Fast runner" perk available in the first Agility tier doesn't work with anything beyond the "light" tier your listed.
You know what is light by looking at it. Light armor will have Light protection.

An addendum to the above addendum:

The Deathsquad armor is HEAVY armor, which means only weapons with the highest armor penetration will lower its defense (Or someone uses melee/explosives). However, it does NOT have the Cumbersome trait, so you get full free movement with it. Unfortunately it can't be modded.

NVG are considered 'no' armor, Gasmask is Light.
