Clear Ernie Island first?
Seems kind of impossible. Got to The Bunker area and there's too many guys with heavy weapons shredding my team. I've hired 4 mercs plus the generic merc you can make via the questionnaire. Haven't got much besides some pistols, a shotgun, an uzi, and a rifle but none of them do enough damage to the enemies. I don't see how stealth is possible here either, as all the patrols have sight from other enemies and combat is triggered before the terrible stealth system even works as intended (or detailed).

I noticed the game kind of implying you should get to establishing an income pretty quick, so I'm wondering if I should focus on that so I can get better mercs and gear etc before tackling the rest of the island? Or am I missing some method of obtaining better weaponry? With current merc stats and gear available I do not believe it's mathematically possible to do these tiles.

Grenades are your friend, especially while in the bunker. Outside of it...Uhh...shoot them? I sent one guy along the east side who was in stealth and killing them from their backlines while the mercs on the west side made the most noise and led the assault, I took a few hits but I don't think its impossible by any means.

mm what? in the first 2 sectors game showers you with 2 mp4, one ak-47, about 10 grenades and 3 rifles. Tonns of meds and some armor as well.
In that bunker map...Uhh...You just swing to the side that has all the graves and there's literally a mass grave that has...Uhh. 3 rifles if you feel the need for more firepower. Also you can do the minefield section first and that gets you a lot of explosives and a few more guns.

Kill the 2 guards outside and overwatch the metal door, they open the door and come to you. Easy kill tunnel.

Yeah, I had the misfortune to have them send a battalion from the outpost as I was preparing to clear the bunker map. Didn't stand a chance, and retreating from the graveyard area when you're surrounded is a death sentence (barely took 2 of my mercs out, and they were in very bad shape).

2 guards outside? What are you talking about? There's at least 6-8 dudes outside around that door on my playthrough lol.

Bunker map went like this for me:

Everyone went left into the graveyard. My two snipers were behind trees furthest left as possible. One with an AK was a little forward, also behind a tree. Then forward a bit more on the top side of the map, against the rocks was another with an AK, and one with about 15 grenades.

Basically dude with grenade tosses one on an enemy to start things, then goes prone. Everyone else is in overwatch on their turns. Enemies move forward, pissed at the guy who threw the grenade and get pew-pewed by everyone else.

Repeat over and over until they are all dead. Grenade guy took a couple light hits, but nobody else was even shot at.

The bunker itself was, uh brief.

Opened the big door, moved back and ended my turn, then stepped forward and saw this:

And one shaped-charge grenade toss later:

That seems to be quite random. I'm on a second Game, cleared the first 3 sectors (coast to town) and have a lot less weapons/armor/grenades etc. from that, compared to my first run. Especially the lack of armor is painfull in front of the bunker, where you will most likely catch some shots, even when you take out 3 enemies with one grenade at the start.
In that light I can understand the struggle of the OP, I managed the area in the first run, but the team was in bad shape after that. This time I'll try Emerald Coast first and hope for some gear...

Sorry, 3 enemies with one grenade? How? My grenades are doing nowhere near that kind of damage. It takes 3 grenades at minimum to kill a single guy here...

I've got an AK but no ammo, and a single rifle. I found the other rifles in the grave but ammo is limited so I can't really hand them out to my team. Not that it matters, they can't land a hit and just get auto-fired down by all the guys with AK's and automatic rifles once they advance on them.

That's with a grenade specialist. Barrys "Shape Grenades" do insane damage in a directed cone from where the grenade land's. Those WW2 grenades you'll usually find, have a circular dmg radius with the most dmg in the middle and less damage compared to Barrys homegrown stuff.

So you actually don't want the enemy to get reinforced outside, you want the two guards to be there in the first room. Aggro and kill them ideally in less than 2 turns, then stack up on the door and open it and the whole building should be all nicely lined up for grenades. I have a screen of it but I don't know how to post screenshots

Look at my screenshot just above. I killed 6 full health enemies with 1 shaped-charge grenade.

You have to clear the first island or you will always get the town attack by the ennemies.

Best way to clear the island is, for me, going for the town last. Clear the forteress before going to town. This way the game dont spawn a attack team early on and on your way you can clear all shield on the fortess .. and grab the mg42 for the boss. Then you go to town.

Grenade damage scales off the Explosives skill.
