Alternate Smiley Recruiting (Spoilers)
Why, in order to recruit an average (at best) merc who seems like a real tool, should you have to go through one of the more difficult fights in the game in one way or another? Boss Blaubert's crew with all their Enforcers are a nightmare. This is a question for the devs, mostly - shouldn't you be able to talk him down and make him see sense for what seems like the first time in his life, instead of him ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ off when Molly dumps him? Just seems... not at all worth it.

there seems to be a peaceful way to recruit him but its bugged they said.

im guessing if you trace smiley's trail when he was with Molle?
there is that stone bed with blanket on a desert sector.
but dunno. I've only done the usual fight or go to arulco outcomes.

You can save Smiley (don't talk to him at all) until you resolve the Boss Blaubert vs. Luigi incident. Side with Luigi, let them kill each other.

Because the people who made this game design tactical systems and have no idea how to design anything else like events/quests.

he´s not that bad. Compared with Pierre, he can be turned into a useful merc pretty easy...
as long as you can stand his persona. He´s free and to get him is not that big of a deal.

What's your problem then? You complained both that Smiley is average (he's free, duh) obnoxious and that he's hard to get.

Just don't get him then.

But if you're OCD about getting all free mercs, then just deal with the somewhat difficult fight. (like I am, sided with Luigi and didn't have too much trouble with the fight playing on Commando. I just put Smiley in a militia training duo because I don't want him on my main team).

You have to make decisions and sometimes can't have everything - at least not served on a silver plate. Those are deliberate design decision and I'm glad the devs put in hard decisions like that.

Gamers are often terrible game designers.

Actually, the quests are great. You have different ways to learn about quests: no matter if you start from north, south or middle - you'll encounter Smiley quest start. You can just blow up the church wall and start it:) You have different ways to resolve quests with different outcomes. If you kill both gangsters beforehand - you won't have a tough fight at the mansion. The same goes for many other quests.

this i got to try. i usually do the kill the boss way before Luigi

why not, it's just different outcomes, and it kinda makes sense, you can't always negotiate through everything to your full advantage

Right and say quest is not saying it's quests linked, there could be some bugs but the variations are quite on the top in CRPG, impressive. And it's no way a unique case.

In matter of quests designs JA3 is very impressive, but for quests mechanics, so solves problems to achieve quests, it is a bit limited. Its set of tools to design problems, is limited.
