Wow! Read everything and learned so many ideas I didn't even discover yet. I always killed Bastien, and didn't know he was useful till later!

Well, he's not actually useful. He's profiteering off refugees later. Thing is: Pierre needs to be convinced you're decent and killing Bastien locks you out of recruiting Pierre altogether, even when everything else is in place.
