Sure, your mercs will miss a lot initially, but:
- Run and Gun is a perk you can get on your mercs, so it's valid for some AI to also have these perks.
- You can help increase the odds of a hit by using more AP on aiming.
- Use stealth/hidden when you spot the enemy from afar, you will be far less likely to be spotted, and allow you some time to plan out an attack.
- Don't necessarily use all your AP on aiming, sometimes best to save at least one AP so you can get prone again after taking a shot.
- You don't need to get in that close to see, just make sure you're using the cover that is available, and if it's only half a shield or cover that will easily fall apart when the enemy shoots, all the more reason to go prone after you fire a shot.
- Don't clump your mercs too closely together, they're more vulnerable as a team to grenades and other explosive weapons. Also means they're more likely to get hit by crossfire.
- The AI is dumb, like most games it has some fatal flaws, one of those is that it will simply run towards you. Sit back, if necessary, instead of firing a shot, use all your AP to fall back and let the enemy come to you.
- Yes the game is hard, and most people are glad, and many people, myself included, would like to see it be made harder.
Sorry sir, but if your mercs are struggling, and if it's not a bug or fault in the demo, it's most likely you're just not doing a good enough job at managing them. Don't blame the game, improve your tactics.
I always question how useful demos are in selling a game, on one hand, they are trying to let you experience the game, but they are also trying to limit what you can do so you still need to buy the game. I don't know what, if any, features were cut out from the demo, but the game itself works fine.
Edit:
Wrong!
Sure, in real life you wouldn't go into combat so under-equipped, but this is a game, and sending in a fully equipped team would make things far too easy. It does also depend on what level of mercs you pay for. In the beginning, you are hiring lowly-ranked mercs because that's all you can afford, higher-level mercs come with better weapons and better perks, but they also cost a lot more.
wrapping up ironman achievement run, no deaths, 1 merc seriously wounded once, game is far too easy
reviews are "very positive"
Yeah, 87% positive as of this time. If you're part of the 13%, that's alright, no need to rant about it. Just post a review on the store side and join the cry in the void.
1. Cover, there's no classic cover.
Cover is only a hint for player but the system is just an obstacles system, The icon reminds you the height of the obstacle you are close to, but it's still not like x% enemy miss if half cover and y% if full cover. It's just about obstacles between target and shooter. So for example the angle with the cover matters a lot, in a game as XCOM it has no influence until it is fully open so higher than 180.
2. Use stealth again and constantly
Firstly go into game options:
- Playability: Deactivate Hide Action Bar. So you'll see constantly the Stealth button to stealth your mercs.
- Keys > Combat section: Check key shortcut to stealth. In TB it's not really useful but in Realt Time it can be a lot faster than click the stealth button.
- Keys > Tactical View (in fact Real Time commands): Check key shortcut for: Select all mercs. It can be handy be abe do it faster, typical is select all and stealth, so stealth all.
Unlike most TB combats system it's easy re stealth during combat, you just need ensure move a character out of any enemy LOS and re stealth. So yeah I mean stealth during TB mode, not real time phase.
Main stealth use cases:
- In real time mode before combat, it's powerful to setup a strong position for combat start, and stealth is a powerful too to achieve it.
- In real time mode still searching enemies, you can as well stealth even if it's slower move. At least you won't be surprised.
- Stealth shoot has a chance of stealth kill, that's insta kill no matter enemy HP. So soon in the game it's less about building mercs to exploit it than take your chance of insta kills the most often possible.
- Stealth/Re stealth is a strong tool to protect a merc seriously injured.
- Stealth/Re stealth can be very useful for medic healing a merc and merc healed.
- Stealth can allow powerful re positioning during combat.
- Stealth ambushes in TB mode can be ultra powerful when well setup.
- When all team is re stealth and enemies have no clues where are exactly the mercs, they start move much more out of cover, move less efficiently and more. That gives you better context after the enemy turn.
- It's a bit more advanced but still. The first sniper rifle you find has an easy modding giving silencers. It's ultra powerful to stealth kill a few enemies before real combat starts. You'll find many of those SR in start island, but also for first tries, hire Kalyna which has one of this SR, it's game changer.
3. Caution range is a trap for chance to hit
One difficulty is not have hit% I bet the demo unlike full game doesn't allow mods and pick one showing it, but you need take care of information shown. One is particularly important it's length. Weapons have a range, highest chance to hit is mid range and bellow, that's really short, shorter than similar other games. There's a visual indicator showing the range, a slider, highest chance to hit for range if half of this slider and lower.
4. Start with a Strong fighting team
It's just about demystifying combats difficulty, for that it's better start with a team oriented for combats. If some mercs aren't available escame to main menu and start again a new play until they are available.
Best start team for combats, Normal difficulty and indulgent option to ensure have more money at start, no long term perspective, it's about having best immediate results to demystify combats:
- Barry, he is OP with ultra powerful personal grenades, and he is very cheap. Try hire Igor and create your IMP first before hire him to try avoid (high chance) Barry requesting a higher salary at first hire.
- Buns, best marksman at acceptable price. Or Fox, they don't like each other so pic only one of both.
- Kalyna, solid fighter at start and will bring you asap your first sniper rifle, SR are the easiest to use strong tool of the game.
- Igor, very solid fighter, he can use knife rather well but don't bother make it his first weapon.
- IMP, merc you create yourself, in in game web browser where you hire mercs check tab at top one is IMP it's to create your own MERC. HP/AGI/DEX/Maksman: 85. It's best attributes/skills for combats (again, no long term perspective). MECH/EPXLO/MEDIC dumped at 0. Spread points that left on STR/Leadership/WIZ, for a short term perspective it's not important, but if demo continues a bit on mainland then Leadership/WIZ 80 and STR 50.
With Normal difficulty and Indulgent option you can hire them 2 weeks, it's more comfortable to discover the game.
