Actually, the poll openly shows both the 1/5 and 5/5 scores. They should cancel each another out. The game with % of more 5/5 won the GOTY.
Well if that were the case it would have been Star Ocean The Second Story R, actually.

Only if the poll was not calculated on multiple variables, which it was. And that has been the case for years to give the best and most accurate representation of the communities opinion on games.

haha, not enough people played those games.

What does Game of the Year even mean? Can a game which a significant minority of players hate be considered the Game of the Year?

the amount of people voting on this poll was relatively small, you can actually check methodology on the page.

There was no small group influencing a vote, it's all organic Voting by the community it's just the case that the userbases prefers JA3 over BG3 the system is not flawed.
I'm perfectly capable of reading the poll numbers that OPENLY SHOW a small group influencing the vote (BG 3 having 4-5 times the 1/5 ratings of other competing games is pretty obvious), but keep trolling if you want.

While I really enjoy JA3 more than BG3 that poll is nonsensical. 75% of voters played BG3, only 30% played JA3.

Baldur Gate has twice as many people voting for it. That degrades the score. It takes one or two bad scores to ruin the overall rating.

If you have 10 people vote for JA3 and they vote 4/5 they the final score will be 4. 10x4/10=4.

If you have 20 people vote for BG3 and 18 vote 4/5 and two guys votes 2 the final score will be 3.8

18x4=72, 2x2=4. 72+4= 76. 76/20=3.8
wow that is a messed up way to vote..
glad JA3 won, but that way to count is nonsense..

Since these concerns have been brought up, just as much as the stalwart bear lovers on the fourm there also was a popularity contest, one Vote per Person, no down voting possible.

Here is the Result (there is no enddate for this poll):

That should make any criticism about the way Codex handles the GOTY poll completely moot, even if it was misguided from the get go. JA3 is also in a simple popular Vote the GOTY of the RPGCodex.

Congratulations, I guess.

It's a Bayesian average which is a valid, more complex and more accurate way of analysing such votes, especially in small datasets, JA3 was subject to the same rules as well and both values were compared for the placing.

It's just wrong to call it nonsense, it's just a misunderstanding on how it works.

The Poll was organized by the Prestigious Felipepepe Author of the CRPG book:
https://crpgbook.files.wordpress.com/2023/10/crpg-book-expanded-edition_4.0.pdf

There is no foul play involved.
The problem is it suffers especially from backlash against the popular - look at the votes there - 13% of votes for Baldur's Gate 3 were 1/5 which is pretty ridiculous and almost certainly people trying to manipulate the vote.

That being said, glad Jagged Alliance 3 got an award, it is REALLY good.

(Kinda surprised Underrail Heavy Duty got so high, Underrail is one of the best RPGs ever but that DLC was...very mediocre)
I would give BG3 2 or 3 out of 5. Its a really dissapointing rpg. I understand the hype and high production. If it attracts more people to the genre it would be a good thing.

BUT dnd5 gameplay mechanics are atrocious and primitive even by tabletop standarts. As a video game its barely works. Artificial rests that cost nothing just to reset skills, huge disbalance between classes, very boring combat encouters where you just left click on things to die and sometimes use 1-2 skills. Game itself is WAY to easy as both AI and their stats cant handle your party.
Story is nothing special either. Entire plot is going from point A to point B, Every npc can be ignored as everything is just a sidequest in that game.

Honestly mechanics in divinity are way better and I would rather actually get divinity 3 instead. I can rant about boredoom inducing BG3 for hours so lets stop here.

JA3 is a solid 3-4 out of 5 game, Its a rare beast of modern military tactic. If it had more flashed rpg mechanics it would be a proper trgp. It doesnt have AAAA budget and team behind it. But in its own niche its a very competent game.

Yeah, I feel nearly the same way. It has earned it's placing, definitely compared to BG3. Which overall has still a really good place for what it is, due to the hype and production value. It's not like they are place 162 like starfield.

If not RPGCodex, who cares what anyone at all thinks? For example, why does the Steam rating matter given that most players have very limited experience with RPGs? RPGCodex is the largest established community for RPG connoisseurs.

That's almost certainly false, given that a quick search confirms there's an rpg subreddit with 195,000 members. RPGCodex is a tiny echo chamber community that loves congratulating itself on being the only 'true' RPG gamers - so much you couldn't resist it just there lol

I mean quantity over quality but yes there is a reason no one knows or cares for RPGCodex.
